Description: The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, Sinai Health System and the University Health Network are seeking to recruit an internist to be based at Sinai Health. The successful candidate must currently hold or be eligible for full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor with a position description of Academic Clinician at the University of Toronto. Effective start date is January 1 2024, or as mutually agreed upon.
This position will have a 90% clinical component with 10% of time devoted to teaching, quality improvement, scholarship and administration. The combined responsibilities will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications, experience, and the needs of the specific hospital site, with the main clinical responsibility being that of caring for patients and supporting the operation of the resident independent inpatient hospitalist services, including co-management work with the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Department of Psychiatry. Total clinical work will be in the range of 30-35 weeks per year as decided by the successful candidate, the hospital Site Director, and the Division Director. The internist will work with, oversee, and help teach and train the hospital medicine fellows. Teaching will occur in the setting of clinical care as well as formal teaching of undergraduate medical student, postgraduate trainees, continuing education and inter-professional teaching. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide attending coverage on GIM services including Obstetrical Medicine inpatient and outpatient medicine, and when required on the Clinical Teaching Units, outpatient clinics and perioperative medicine service. The successful candidate will participate in at least 1 Divisional/Departmental/Hospital or University committee related to clinical care, quality improvement, education or administration.
The precise mix of clinical and non-clinical responsibilities will depend on the successful candidate’s background. Competitive candidates will possess strong communication, organization and interpersonal skills that enable them to work collaboratively with other physicians, learners, hospital staff, allied health, nursing and administrators. The successful candidate will have experience in teaching. A strong interest and experience in inpatient internal medicine would be an asset.
The successful candidate must hold MD qualifications, be certified (or be eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine and be licensed (or be eligible for licensure) by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
Academic rank, salary and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Compensation will be negotiated and within the usual income range for an academic internist in the Province of Ontario (estimated range is $250,000 per year).
