Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) and NewYork Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) are excited to announce an opportunity to join a new, Inter-Departmental Genetic Counselor Program as a Lecturer and genetic counselor at CUIMC. This new initiative has been developed in partnership between the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) and the Departments of Pathology & Cell Biology, Medicine, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics.


The program, managed through the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology, seeks five highly motivated Genetic Counselors to provide patient care and make our overarching goal of precision medicine a reality. 
Each candidate will provide clinical genetic counselling services in one of the participating primary clinical departments and act as a liaison between their respective clinical department and the CUIMC molecular diagnostic laboratories, the Precision Genomics Laboratory (PGL) and the Laboratory of Personalized Genomic Medicine (PGM). Candidates can indicate their preference for a specific departmental affiliation (if any) on their application.


Minimum Degree Required

Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling

Minimum Qualifications

Board eligible or board certified as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to work independently. Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to work collaboratively in multi- disciplinary teams
and conversational Spanish preferred.

Additional Information

Successful candidates will work in a multi-disciplinary manner with other CUIMC providers and have the ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team. This represents a unique opportunity for clinically-oriented genetic counselors to operate in an interdisciplinary intellectual community with close links to both the clinical laboratories and research counselors and genomicists of the IGM. Responsibilities of the role include providing genetic counseling to patients and family members (under limited supervision), conducting in-take screening, risk assessment, explaining the nature and scope of testing procedures, act as a liaison between the clinical department and the molecular diagnostic laboratories. The incumbent will support the clinical testing services of the PGL and PGM laboratories by assisting in the interpretation of test results, communicate results to patients and families and write summary reports. He/she will develop and present in-service education to physicians and other health care providers as it relates to PGL and PGM test availability, TAT, requirements, and limitations, attend and participate in professional meetings and directed educational opportunities, and have an active role in the drafting of manuscripts and publication of findings. Lastly candidates will participate in other educational, research, and academic service programs in the Department in accordance with the wishes of the department chair
