Job Purpose
Academic and clinical teaching and assessments according to a set syllabus of the post basic nursing programme within a Primary health Care approach, to assist in simulation laboratory management, to support the department and faculty in pursue of achieving its academic objectives, academic administration from admission till completions, and to contribute to academic initiatives undertaken by the faculty to enhance a teaching and Work Integrated Learning environment. Work in the programme coordination structure of the Department and where applicable teach in the basic programmes.

 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Minimum requirements: Lecturer (Permanent position)

  • Master’s degree in Nursing Science
  • Must be a professional nurse and midwife
  • Qualification in Nursing Education and Primary Health Care
  • Registration at the South African Nursing Council as a nurse, midwife, nurse educator, primary healthcare specialist
  • At least two (2) years relevant academic lecturing experience in primary healthcare nursing or three (3) years clinical experience in the specialised nursing discipline of primary healthcare nursing
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters qualification in order to appoint at the Lecturer level.

  • BTech/Honours degree in Primary Health Care
  • Must be a professional nurse and midwife
  • Qualification in Nursing Education
  • Registration at the South African Nursing Council as a nurse, midwife, nurse educator, primary healthcare specialist
  • At least (1) year relevant academic lecturing experience in primary healthcare nursing or three (3) years clinical experience in the specialised nursing discipline of primary healthcare nursing
  • The appointment at Junior Lecturer level is a 5-year contract subject to completion of Masters degree qualification within this period. Upon completion of the Masters qualification, conversion to permanent and at Lecturer level will be subject to institutional governance for approval.


Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

  • Lecturer in the Nursing Science Primary Healthcare Postgraduate Diploma programme.
  • Management of and partaking in skill laboratory activities and assets in line with SANC requirements, following the nursing standards, and coordination of laboratory and placements rosters of staff and students.
  • Curriculum development and theoretical and clinical teaching and assessments in the programme through e.g. accompaniment, monitoring and reporting.
  • Implement and monitoring academic and clinical records and progress of students according to SANC regulations in the postgraduate programme, and full academic administration from admissions to completions.
  • Quality assurance principles to be followed in the PHC Programme and when needed in other programmes offered in the Department.
  • Academic and clinical development of student learner nurses within a work-integrated learning and mobile learning situation.
  • Assist in the Department with additional educational related activities where a need is identified by the HoD, to enhance the quality of delivery of programmes.
  • Be involved in community development projects and portfolios in the department.
  • Be involved in professional development sessions and research projects.

 

Competencies

  • Proficiency in English (Verbal & Written)
  • Good administrative and organizational skills (record keeping, etc.)
  • Appropriate level of academic and clinical knowledge in Nursing Science to apply a PHC approach in offering the nursing curricula.
  • Ensures that the classroom and clinical education settings, used for teaching are well equipped.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team as a role-model.
  • Demonstrate planning, organising, leadership and control skills to assist in tasks related to admission of students till completion of their studies.
  • Computer literacy and implementation thereof in education settings of mobile learning.
  • Take the responsibility and accountability in implementing allocated portfolios under the guidance of a program coordinator and as requested by the Head of the Department to enhance the operations in the Department.
  • Strong learner centered approach and ability to work in a team and in environment with strong work ethics.
  • Good interpersonal skills in interaction with colleagues, students, health professionals and others.
  • Show adaptability in the teaching and learning environment in becoming an active team-player in the Department, who addresses possible challenges in the environment in a pro-active manner
  • Research skills in conducting projects and being part in accompaniment of post graduate students
  • Proficiency in MS office suite, excel an power-point programmes
