Role Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a joint appointment between the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and the Centre for Health Economics (CHE) to appoint a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Reader in Health Economics dedicated to mental health economics and policy. The appointee will conduct their research within CHE and contribute to teaching in the Medical School. This appointment is part of a key strategic institutional focus aimed at strengthening mental health research at the University of York. The successful candidate will contribute to internationally outstanding research and scholarship, applying an economic perspective to the analysis and evaluation of mental health policy which is a core element of CHE's research agenda.



We are seeking an individual with a demonstrable interest in / track record of research in mental health economics and mental health policy. The successful candidate will be conversant with the range of research methods used in health economics applicable to mental health including their application to potentially large and complex / linked data. The appointee will provide leadership in the teaching of health economics within the Medical School.


The main duties of the role include planning, managing and conducting research projects related to the economics of mental health. This will include communicating the results of research to different groups and contributing to the production of research outputs. Duties include the delivery of lectures for undergraduate students on Health Economics, including curriculum development. At Senior Lecturer / Reader level, duties include the supervision of research activities of less experienced colleagues, providing expert advice and guidance, and developing research proposals to funding organisations.


Skills, experience and qualifications needed:

  • PhD in economics or a quantitative subject or equivalent experience
  • national/international reputation in the economics of mental health and/or mental health policy experience
  • ability to manage research projects related to the economics of mental health
  • ability to design and deliver lectures for undergraduate students on health economics
  • In addition, at Senior Lecturer / Reader level:
  • experience of generating new and  innovative research ideas, identifying opportunities for collaborative research, and developing research projects generating external research funding


 The post is available full-time although applications for flexible or part-time working (minimum of 0.8 FTE) will be considered.
