Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Nutrition/Public Health commencing 01.06.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment 

The PhD student will be enrolled at Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, but will be expected to collaborate closely with co-supervisors at Department of Food and Resource Economics.

The Section for Preventive and Clinical Nutrition at Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports possesses specialist expertise within the documentation of the health effects of foods, diets, clinical nutrition and the use and development of biomarkers. (Read more here).

The Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) holds research expertise in economics and social science aspects of food consumption and production, environment and nature (Read more here).

Project description

In this project, the aims are to identify intervention and entry points to enable a transformation process to resilient, sustainable food systems and to identify potential pathways towards more sustainable consumption and food production. This will be done by mapping and analysing five case territories (Copenhagen, Cilento, North Hessia, Warsaw, Kenitra) in a transdisciplinary way from four perspectives • system transition, • shifting towards sustainable diets, • enhancing organic food & farming, and • reducing waste. The tasks include collection and analysis of available data from households and public procurement related to organic and sustainable food systems, i.e. adherence to recommendations and dietary indices, health, economic factors, socio-cultural factors and environment. The PhD project is part of a larger European study with cross-disciplinary research collaboration.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Work for the department

Formal requirements

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Public Health; Nutrition or related fields with good results and good English skills.
As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any), experience in collection and analysis of empirical data, and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 331,125 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,811). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science.
