PhD fellowship in Dental Traumatology

We are offering a PhD fellowship in Dental Traumatology, Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, commencing February 1st, 2022 or as soon as possible.
The candidate will work in the field of Dental Traumatology.

The position is as a general rule full-time time (37 hours/week) and employment is for a 3-year period.

Project/Scientific area of research

The research project will be a collaboration between Pediatric Dentistry and Clinical Genetics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, both research areas at Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and the Dental Trauma Clinic, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet), Copenhagen, Denmark. 

The project consists of two parts (A&B):
A: Investigation of the influence of patients’ age at the time of injury relative to pulp survival in a historical and prospective cohort of patients suffering a lateral luxation injury of permanent incisors with mature root development. 

B: Mapping and evaluating reasons for the loss of permanent incisors in 8-18 year-old children suffering a dental trauma in the Capital Region of Denmark. 

In both projects the candidate will work in the Dental Trauma Clinic at the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) handling children at different ages and collecting clinical data from patients with traumatic dental injuries.  

Supervision

The project will be carried out under the supervision of:

  • Main supervisor: Associate Professor, PhD, Dr Odont Nuno Vibe Hermann, Pediatric Dentistry and Clinical Genetics, Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Co-supervisor: Professor, Dr Odont Simon Storgård Jensen, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet), Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Co-supervisor Senior Consultant, PhD Eva Lauridsen, Dental Trauma Clinic, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet), Copenhagen, Denmark.

Qualifications

The candidate must hold a degree in dentistry (equivalent of 3+2 years) and must have obtained authorization to practice as a dentist at the time of employment. The candidate must have clinical experience from Danish paediatric community dentistry as well as clinical dental traumatology. Furthermore, fluency in oral and written Danish is a prerequisite, as the position entails Danish documentary work as well as communication with and clinical examination of Danish children and young adults.  
Candidates with some research and clinical experience and knowledge in the field of dental traumatology or closely related fields are preferred. 

Terms of employment

The employment is for a 3-year period. A stipend will cover the salary and tuition fee for the 3-year period. 

It is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant 

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The further process 

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor. 

The assessor makes a non-prioritized assessment of the academic qualifications and experience with respect to the above-mentioned area of research, techniques, skills and other requirements listed in the advertisement.
Once the assessment work has been completed each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.

Candidates who are already enrolled as PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences cannot apply for this position.
