Faculty of Medicine, Department of Experimental Medical Science

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Description of the workplace

The research group is lead by professor Roger Olsson. The research at Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) is highly interdisciplinary covering organic chemistry, in vivo and in vitro biology, physics, and materials science. We like to work on projects where we can advance life sciences by bringing together new ideas from all areas of the STEM fields. CBT is positioned within the Medical Faculty at Lund University and we have several ongoing projects with leading groups and clinicians.

What we offer

Lund University is a public authority which means that you receive specific benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension. Read more on the University website about being an employee at Lund University.

We are offering an interdisciplinary work environment where chemists, physicists, and biologists work closely together to solve complex problems. We hope that you thrive in a curiosity driven research environment.

Duties and responsibilities

Organic bioelectronic medicine is a new modality in drug discovery that uses electricity to treat disease by altering the electrical communication between cells. All cells are electrically active, endogenous electrical signaling originates from transmembrane potentials and contributes to cell behaviors, such as migration, adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. In addition, electrical signals are also involved in tissue development and repair.

We are now starting up a project where we develop and use syringe injectable conductive polymer hydrogels which can be used to treat diseases through electron transfer to/from tissue. The candidate will characterize these polymers in vitro and in animal model systems in vivo.

The candidate will work with animal models, especially Zebrafish.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and the candidate is expected to appreciate a wide range of techniques ranging from electrical measurements to in vivo biology.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • A degree within nanotechnology, materials science, chemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, or equivalent

The following are considered merits for the position:

  • Experience in cell- and molecular biology methods, e.g. aseptic cell culture work Experience in work with conductive polymers
  • Experience in electrophysiological measurements and/or electrical characterization of materials
  • Experience in work with neurological diseases or cancer
  • Experience in work with animal models Experience in work with functional characterization of solid materials and/or materials in suspension
  • Abroad competence profile is important and knowledge within areas such as materials science, chemistry, physics, biology, and nanoscience are relevant for the project.
