Synapse Physiology of Learning and Memory
(starting Oct 2021)

Our research group 'Cellular Neurophysiology' at the Department of Biomedicine is investigating functional properties of excitatory and inhibitory synapses onto young and mature neurons in the adult mouse hippocampus (Heigele et al. 2016, Nat Neurosci 19:263-270; Schulz et al 2018, Nat Commun, 39:5210-5221). In the new project, we will use cutting-edge electrophysiological, imaging and optogenetic techniques to focus on synaptic recruitment of adult born hippocampal neurons in vitro and in vivo. We will concentrate on network mechanisms underlying pattern separation, important for the distinction of similar memory items (see Lodge & Bischofberger 2019, Behav Brain Res 372:112036). We further want to use in vivo Ca2+-imaging (miniscope) to finally unravel the circuit mechanisms by which young neurons support pattern separation during learning behaviour.

Your position

The key objective of the project is the characterization of synaptic recruitment of newborn neurons in the adult hippocampus at different developmental stages after cell birth. Your work will show how young neurons shape information processing in the adult hippocampus.

Your profile

You are a highly motivated applicant with a Master in Neuroscience, Biology or Physics. You have experience in patch-clamp recordings and/or stereotaxic injections into the mouse brain. Teamwork within the international group requires spoken and written English language skills.

We offer you

We offer a research position for 3-4 years in an international, interdisciplinary research environment and a Neuroscience Graduate teaching program at the Biocenter of the University of Basel. Salary and social benefits are provided according to University Basel rules.

Application / Contact

Please submit your application, including the appropriate documentation, references and a letter of motivation to Prof. Josef Bischofberger, email: josef.bischofberger@unibas.ch
