Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University invites applications for a clinical-track or tenure-track position in the Section of Oncology. Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and must be board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) by the negotiated position start date. Medical oncology residents in the final year of a training program leading to eligibility for board certification will be considered.

For a tenure-track position, preference will be given to applicants with postgraduate research training and demonstrated ability in research related to the specialty. Candidates who have recently completed an approved medical oncology residency or will complete their residency within a year will also be considered.


Section and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join two medical oncologists, two radiation oncologists (both boarded in both Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology), one medical physicist, three residents, one specialty intern, four licensed veterinary technicians, and two radiation therapy technicians comprising the Section of Oncology (medical and radiation oncology operate as one section). The Section provides care for patients in the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, a tertiary care service and teaching facility with a diverse caseload and an established referral base. Clinical service and teaching responsibilities are distributed among the faculty members and residents. Faculty participate in training of residents, interns, and professional (DVM) students, and have the opportunity to train undergraduate and graduate students. Cornell is a world-class research institution with extensive research facilities and opportunities for collaboration with scientists of all disciplines at the Ithaca campus, Weill Medical College and Cornell Tech campuses in New York City, and regional cancer centers. Individual research space is available. The successful tenure-track candidate will develop or continue an independent funded research program in clinical, basic, and/or translational research in addition to conducting collaborative research, while the successful clinical-track candidate will participate in collaborative research.

The candidate will be expected to provide excellent clinical care and effective client communication, as well as deliver didactic and laboratory instruction to veterinary students, and participate in active continuing education for the veterinary community.


Expectations and Work Distribution

The candidate should exhibit outstanding interpersonal skills and a cooperative work ethic that will interface well with all Sections of the College. Distribution of effort in the Section and Department will be determined in accordance with the service needs, academic priorities, and the candidate’s expertise and academic goals. Commitment percentages to clinical teaching and service in the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, lecture and laboratory instruction of veterinary students and house officers, and independent and collaborative research are negotiable. Clinical duties require flexible working hours that may include daytime, evening, and occasional weekend responsibilities.


Salary

The salary range for this position is $155,000-195,000; salary, rank, and title will be commensurate with academic credentials and experience.

Cornell University is located in Ithaca on the shores of Cayuga Lake in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York. Ithaca is a vibrant city with art museums, theaters, and a diverse selection of restaurants. It is within driving distance of several large metropolitan centers, award-winning wineries, and downhill skiing areas. Ithaca is a nature-lovers paradise with ample opportunities for outdoor activities.
