PhD Position in Translational Cardiology and Next-Generation Optogenetics

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate in the context of translational cardiology & next-generation optogenetics at the Institute of Physiology in Bern (Switzerland). The project "Differential role of sympathetic nerve or beta-adrenoceptor activation for arrhythmia formation in long QT syndrome" aims at investigating the interplay between the sympathetic nervous system and the heart in the genetic arrhythmia disorder long-QT syndrome with the ultimate goal to improve anti-arrhythmic therapies.

In this interdisciplinary project, the successful candidate will work at the interface between cardiology, physiology, and molecular engineering - learning and performing both, electrophysiological and molecular engineering techniques. The PhD candidate will perform cellular and whole heart (optical) electrophysiological / imaging experiments on rabbit and mouse tissue in vivo and ex vivo, will engineer and functionally assess novel optogenetic tools in vitro and perform gene therapy in vivo to investigate the adrenergic cardiac innervation, signaling, and resulting changes in cardiac electrophysiology.

The ideal candidate:
  • has a strong interest in cardiac physiology, optogenetics and molecular engineering
  • has keen interest and experience in experimental animal models
  • is in the possession of an animal welfare certificate
  • has experience in molecular cloning
  • possesses basic knowledge in cell culture and electrophysiological methods
The applicant should submit a CV (including contacts of two referees) and a one-page motivation letter, highlighting her/his experiences according in above-mentioned points and indicating his/her motivation to join the project.
