Department: Department of Biomedical Sciences Regime Full-time Postdoc position: Microglia-synapse molecular interactions in neurodegenerative disorders About the labs The Mancuso lab (Microglia and Inflammation in Neurological Disorders, MIND) at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology and the De Wit lab (Laboratory of Synapse Biology) at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research, Belgium, are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work on a project on microglia-synapse interactions in neurodegenerative disorders. About the project Microglia and neuroinflammation play a central role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Microglia interactions with synapses are essential for neural circuit development and function, but the role and molecular mechanisms of microglia-synapse interactions in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders remain poorly understood. This project will use mouse models, multi-omics approaches, iPSC and cutting-edge humanized mouse systems to unravel how microglia-synapse interactions contribute to the initiation and perpetuation of neurodegenerative disease. Your job This is a project at the interface of two labs: the Mancuso lab, working on human and mouse microglia biology in brain disorders, and the Laboratory of Synapse Biology working on the molecular mechanisms that control precise synaptic connectivity in healthy and diseased neural circuits (see references below). In this project, you will make use of innovative multi-omics approaches, genome engineering, viral vector technology, iPSC and humanized mouse technology to unravel the role and molecular mechanisms of microglia-synapse interactions in neurodegenerative disorders. The successful applicant will work in both labs and divide the time between the two sites. Selected references:
