Postdoc in database development and data science within Pharmacogenomics

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious software/database developer, bioinformatician, and data scientist for a 2-year position commencing 15 February 2022 or after agreement.

Our research

The Gloriam group (www.gloriamgroup.org) identifies mechanisms, structures, and ligands of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) – the main mediators of human signalling and drug responses. The group also heads the GPCR field’s main database and web server, GPCRdb (http://www.GPCRdb.org) serving 5,000 researchers every month. Recently, a subgroup managed by Dr. Alexander S. Hauser has expanded to investigate the impact of genetic variations on drug response combining genetic, pharmacological, and epidemiological data. Currently, the Gloriam group consists of 10 members with a very international profile. The group provides a strong and ambitious research environment and has recently published in e.g., Nature, Cell, Nature Reviews in Drug Discovery, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology and Nucleic Acids Research.

Your job

Your job will be to select, extract, and integrate pharmacogenomic data and to create a new online open access research resource for reference research data, data visualisation, analysis, and data-driven tools to design new hypotheses and experiments. This will be achieved in tight collaboration with a strong local team of fellow developers and interdisciplinary scientists, as well as experts and users from the international research community.

The position is part of an ambitious project funded by the Lundbeck Foundation entitled "Advancing personalised medicine for psychiatric diseases through integrative GPCR pharmacogenomics". The overall objective of the project is to provide a basis for genetics-based personalised drug prescriptions for some of the most frequently used CNS drugs acting on GPCRs, and to create a public research platform to characterise GPCR genetic variants. The project runs in close collaboration with the Molecular Pharmacology group led by Professor Hans Bräuner-Osborne and the iPSYCH consortium (https://ipsych.dk/en/). You will create an online hub for a consolidated global “open science” effort to make a knowledge base for Pharmacogenomics, enabling integration and analysis of data from genetics, structure biology, molecular pharmacology, and epidemiology.

Career development within research and education is part of the position. The candidate is expected to take part in teaching at the department (10% of the time), which will support the development of a relevant teaching portfolio.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious bioinformatician, data scientist, or software/database developer proficient with biologically driven questions and experienced in web programming.

Essential experience and skills:

  • A PhD relevant to bioinformatics, data science, programming or software/database development
  • Excellent programming skills, preferably in Python
  • Experience in (big) dataset analysis and parsing
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new methods and (biological) subjects
  • Basic understanding of protein biology and pharmacological data
  • Demonstrated strong career progression and high ambition
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience project management (own and others)
  • Experience with working with biobanks such as the UKBiobank
  • Web-programming (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) and web frameworks (Flask/Django)
  • Experience with software and/or database design
  • Code versioning with Github
  • Knowledge of pharmacogenomics
  • Strong publication list
