The University of Kent’s School of Psychology is seeking to hire a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) with expertise in conducting experimental psychology research, including using face morphing / averaging and eye-tracking methodology. The job will involve completing a series of studies for the Leverhulme Trust research project grant “Face detection by humans”, under the direction of Dr Bindemann and in collaboration with Dr Rob Jenkins (University of York).

It is expected that the successful applicant will have a strong background of conducting high-quality empirical research, preferably with experience in face, person or scene perception, and construction and analysis of eye-tracking experiments (i.e., Eyelink, ExperimentBuilder, Matlab). A good understanding of these topics and experience with these methodologies are highly desirable.

The successful candidate will coordinate these activities with a PhD student in the Psychology Department at the University of York (under the supervision of Dr Rob Jenkins). They will also co-ordinate with research assistants and PhD students on other related projects. Thus, good interpersonal skills, experience working in research groups and managing a research laboratory are important.

As Post-Doctoral Research Associate you will:

Assist with study design, preparation of experimental materials, data collection, statistical analysis, and writing up of results for publication
Write up research work for publication and disseminate the project’s findings at relevant national and international conferences

Co-ordinate activities with a PhD student in the Psychology Department at the University of York

Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism


To be successful in this role you will have:

A doctorate, or equivalent qualification or experience in psychology or an allied subject (or submitted thesis prior to the interview date)

An excellent record of publications in quality peer reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career

Experience of programming, conducting and analysing research using cognitive psychology and eye-tracking methods

Highly skilled in independently using statistical packages, such as SPSS and/or R

The School of Psychology is a leading centre of research and education with a commitment to scientific excellence, a concern for tackling problems of contemporary relevance and a commitment to have positive impact. We currently have over 40 faculty members, 80 PhD students and a diverse range of externally funded research projects that employ numerous post-doctoral staff. All are supported by an experienced Professional and Technical Services team.

This role is being offered on a full time basis for a fixed term period of 36 months.

Due to the funding for the position the starting salary is likely to be £34,189.
