Postdoc at LUDC
Lund University, Faculty of Medicine

Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 600 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for education and research within medicine and healthcare. Our academic programs are closely linked with the healthcare system and are firmly anchored in the faculty’s strong research tradition. Our research spans a broad field within experimental preclinical research, near-patient clinical research and health sciences research. The Faculty of Medicine, with its 1,800 employees and 2,700 students in Lund and Malmö, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers and researchers from all over the world.

The Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; opens a position for a Postdoctor. This is one of five positions now announced within the framework of the SSF funded project LUDC-IRC ( and the strategic research environment Exodiab ( LUDC is one of the largest diabetes research centres in the world with approximately 300 investigators and staff members working towards improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diabetes. The centre combines expertise in genetics, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and clinical diabetes and endocrinology to achieve these goals. LUDC has large unique biobanks and databases with genome-wide data linked to national registries providing information on disease aetiology, progression as well as outcome and treatment. The centre has in-house platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics. Omics-information combined with extensive phenotyping allows a systems medicine approach to dissect the complexity of diabetes. A central theme of the Centre is to develop precision medicine to improve health and the quality of life of diabetic patients.

The postdoctoral position is placed at the Department of Experimental Medical Science, Section for Diabetes, Metabolism and Endocrinology, at the Biomedical Centre in Lund. The overall aim of our research is to identify molecular mechanisms underlying the development of obesity-induced insulin resistance and diabetes. We are now seeking a postdoctoral co-worker for the project “Molecular determinants of plasma lipid profile and adipocyte size distribution”, in which we aim to characterize the association between adipose gene expression, plasma lipids, adipocyte size and insulin sensitivity in humans.

Work duties

  • Experimental work including isolation and culture of adipocytes, and analysis of gene expression, cellular insulin sensitivity and cell size distribution.
  • Bioinformatic analysis of global gene expression and cell size distribution data.
  • In silico studies of transcriptional regulation and genetic variation.
  • Planning and documentation

  • PhD in biomedicine, cell- and molecular biology, bioinformatics or equivalent.
  • Practical experience of cell- and/or molecular biology methods.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Strong collaborative and social skills
  • Strong organizational skills, including planning and documentation

  • Experience of research in the field of Diabetes and/or adipose tissue biology.
  • Experience of working with databases for the study of transcriptional regulation and genetic variation
  • Experience of gene expression analysis using RNA sequencing or microarray
  • Experience in bioinformatics

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
