The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) was established at the University of New South Wales by the Australian Government in 1986 to extend the knowledge base required for effective treatment of individuals with alcohol and other drug related problems and to enhance the overall research capacity in the drug and alcohol field. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre is supported by funding from the Australian Government Department of Health under the Drug and Alcohol Program. The Centre is highly regarded, both nationally and internationally, for its contribution to drug and alcohol research.


About the roles:

  • 3 positions: Each will be a 3 year Fixed-term, Full-Time opportunity
  • Academic Level A/B: $76,570 - $126, 386 (+ 17% superannuation & Leave loading)

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will hold an NDARC Postdoctoral Fellowship and work closely with senior researchers at NDARC, providing support across a number of ongoing drug and alcohol research projects in alignment with NDARC’s core workplan areas, which are:

  • Prevention and early intervention
  • Clinical research
  • Physical and mental comorbidity
  • Epidemiology of substance use and harms
  • Justice health and drug policy
  • Indigenous health
  • Health economics and biostatistics
  • Family, communities and society

The role of Postdoctoral Research Fellow reports to a senior researcher appropriate to their research interests and expertise and has no direct reports other than an expectation to contribute to HDR supervision.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Completed PhD in a relevant discipline, including public health, epidemiology, social science, biostatistics or health economics.
  • Relevant experience and applied knowledge in a health/medical field;
  • Demonstrated experience in methodologically rigorous data collection and/or data analyses;
  • Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team;
  • Evidence of research activity in at least one of NDARC’s core workplan areas;
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.


Level B (in addition to the above)

  • Strong research output, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and publications and success in applying and/or attracting competitive research funding
  • Demonstrated capacity to carry out independent research as indicated by a proven track record of writing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
