Postdoctoral Position for Research into Obesity and Type 1 Diabetes
Catholic University of Leuven Laboratory of Experimental Medicine and Endocrinology
Belgium

Professor Bart Van der Schueren and Professor Roman Vangoitsenhoven's research team focuses on obesity and its metabolic consequences, Whereas Professor Chantal Mathieu's research team focuses on the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D). They have joined forces in a research project lead by University College Dublin (IMI2 SOPHIA Horizon 2020 project), in which the effects of obesity in patients living with type 1 diabetes will be investigated through data mining of large existing cohorts. Whereas T1D is often misunderstood as a disease of the lean, more than two thirds of adult patients living with type 1 diabetes suffer from obesity. This means a double burden as these patients are both at risk of complications of obesity and T1D. This issue has been poorly studied and characterised in the past, but is now being recognized as an important challenge for the future. The applicant will become part of a unique and dynamic research group of Clinical and Experimental Endocrinology, that combines both fundamental and clinical research. In addition, he/she will operate in an international setting as cooperation with centers across Europe and the US will be required. https://www.kuleuven.be/wieiswie/nl/person/00046836 http://www.kuleuven.be/wieiswie/en/person/00009139 https://www.kuleuven.be/wieiswie/nl/person/00085333
