Role Description

A fixed term postdoctoral appointment is available for 18 months in the Condensed Matter Group, part of the Department of Physics, to work in the group of Dr Vlado Lazarov, on a MBE growth of thin films and atomic characterisation by TEM for device structures.

The Department of Physics is at the forefront of pioneering global research and technological advancement in our world leading research centres, focused around biophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and plasma physics and fusion energy at the York Plasma Institute. As a Department we strive to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and across all staff groups. We promote good practice and a strong culture of equality in higher education, and are proud of our Juno Champion Award and Athena SWAN Silver Award.

Role
You will conduct individual and collaborative research projects in the field of materials for energy, which includes thermoelectrics, solar cells, and spintronics. You will growth oxide and metallic films and determine their structural and electronic/magnetic properties by number of experimental techniques. Appropriate research techniques and methods will include TEM/STEM. XRD, AFM, VSM, and device fabrication among the others. You will work closely with teams in Physics and Chemistry, as well as several industrial partners including Greatcell Solar and Cristal. You will also help write-up and disseminate research results, coordinate joint publications and further contribute to the identification of possible new areas of research. You will participate in seminar and conference presentations, enjoy public engagement, and outreach activities.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a PhD in Physics or related discipline (e.g. Materials, Chemistry, etc.) as well as significant experience in thin film growth by Molecular Beam Epitaxy, and structural analysis by advance electron microscopy techniques. You will also have experience in TEM specimen preparation by FIB and classical methods as well as transport properties. You will need to be self-motivated with a strong work ethic, but also willing to work as part of a research team. You will need to have a passion for the scientific literature and for communicating your own science through publication. You will also have highly developed communication skills including competency to make presentations at conferences and the ability to / experience of developing research projects and objectives; conducting research projects; and working in a harmonious team.
