The Microbiome Research Centre (MRC) is part of the St George & Sutherland Clinical School, UNSW Medicine & Health. Established in 2017, the MRC is Australia’s first research centre solely dedicated to studying the microbiota in health and disease. Researchers within the MRC integrate basic science and translational medicine, and harness powerful multi-omic approaches such as genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and microbiomics as well as bioinformatics to answer pertinent questions on the microbiome. The MRC’s research is focussed across five core themes: cancer, women and children’s health, infection, immunity and inflammation, critical care and mental health and neuroscience. https://microbiome.org.au/

The St George and Sutherland Clinical School was established in 1969 and is situated on the grounds of St George and Sutherland Hospitals, Sydney. The School has a long record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and clinical training as well as in biomedical and clinical trials research, with strengths in intensive care, thrombosis and haemostasis, surgical oncology and immunology/inflammation fields.

The Opportunity  

  • 1-year Fixed-term, Full-time (35 hr/week) opportunity
  • $78K – $104 (+ 17% Superannuation & Leave loading)
  • Based at St George Hospital, Sydney, Australia
  • Full working rights are required for the duration of the contract.

A Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (Bioinformatics) (Level A) is expected to contribute towards the research effort of UNSW and to develop their research expertise through the pursuit of defined projects relevant to their particular field of research.

The position will undertake bioinformatic analysis and interpretation of data across a large number of research projects at the Microbiome Research Centre (MRC). The MRC has five research themes including maternal and foetal health, cancer, critical care, mental health/neuroscience, and triple I (inflammation, infection and immunity). Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biophysics or a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Experience in statistical methods in the context of biological systems.
  • Proven experience with programming (e.g., R, Python, C++, Perl).
  • Experience with common pipelines for Metagenomics analysis: 16S- QIIME, Mothur, USEARCH.
  • Demonstrated experience in MEtaGenome ANalyze (MEGAN) pipeline, PICRUSt and RNA-Seq bioinformatics tools.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills with the ability to design and conduct complex studies independently as well as in multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
