The Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), established in 2003 under the leadership of Founding Director Professor Perry Bartlett, has developed a reputation as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes.  Part of the University of Queensland, the Institute is home to over 450 scientific staff led by 41 Group Leaders. 

To focus on important areas, QBI has established three Institute Centres: The Science of Learning Centre; The Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research and; The Centre for Neurogenetics and Statistical Genomics. The importance of QBI's research is demonstrated through publications in the most prestigious international journals and a very high success rate in NHMRC and ARC grants.

About This Opportunity 

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will contribute to the research group of Dr. Matilde Balbi. The group goal is to understand the intrinsic neuroprotective mechanisms of the brain under pathological conditions such as stroke. The group uses a multi-level approach combining in vivo imaging techniques, electrophysiology, brain stimulation, automation, and machine learning in behaving rodents.

Primary duties will include developing a coherent research program and an emerging research profile. It is expected that you will prepare and publish high quality scholarly papers and contribute to the academic environment of the laboratory and institute.   You will participate in applications for competitive research funding support as well as manage and supervise research assistants.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre.

Our Ideal Candidate

You will hold or be in progress towards a PhD in in the area of neuroscience, engineering or related fields and have demonstrated technical expertise in any of the following areas: imaging, neuronal circuits and networks, electrophysiology, optogenetics or computational neuroscience; engineering, optical neuro-imaging. You will have strong quantitative skills in data analysis, including some coding experience and knowledge of formulating and critically testing scientific hypotheses. A passion for scientific discovery with a high level of drive, initiative, and enthusiasm as well willingness to take risks in pursuit of ambitious goals is essential. Your excellent verbal and written communications skills, and the ability to work both independently will help you excel in this role.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 12 months at Academic level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $69,342.89 - $92,782.26, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $81,131.18 - $108,555.25.
