Postdoctoral Research Fellow

This post sits within the Wolfson Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, part of Queen Mary University of London. The SMD is a leading medical and dental school that offers international levels of excellence in research and teaching as well as providing clinical service for a population of unrivalled ethnic diversity in east London and the wider Thames Gateway. This exciting and unique role will provide an opportunity to be involved in a number of research projects on salt reduction in the UK and China, particularly, the successful candidate will work on the MRC and NIHR co-funded project – Scaling up a school-based education programme to reduce salt in China. The overall aim of the project is to develop a feasible, sustainable and adaptable scale-up package for a larger-scale implementation of the school-based education programme to reduce salt intake in children and their families in China. The project is a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London and The George Institute for Global Health China and several other Chinese organisations. The principal investigators Professor Feng He and Professor Graham MacGregor are multi-disciplinary and focus on evidence-based approaches to improve public health. The successful candidate will be expected to assist the management of this MRC and NIHR co-funded project and will work closely with Prof He and Prof MacGregor on a number of other research projects on nutrition and global health.

Applicants should hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, Health Economics or a related discipline with demonstrated experience in computational and statistical analysis. Applicants should also have a proven track record of publishing research in high impact peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate should be pro-active, insightful, with excellent organisation skills, and able to use his/her initiative, as well as working in a team.

The successful candidate will gain extensive and comprehensive knowledge and research experiences in implementing strategies to reduce salt, sugar and saturated fat, and building capacity and capability to develop, implement and evaluate nutrition policies, e.g. salt reduction in LMICs, especially in China. The candidate will also enhance their knowledge on nutrition and health, and the strategies to improve the diet, e.g., reducing salt, sugar and saturated fat consumption, for the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

The position is open to international applicants. Applications from any area of public health, nutrition, epidemiology and health economics are welcome; those integrate a range of disciplines are particularly encouraged.

This is a fixed term appointment, starting as soon as possible and ending on 30th November 2023. Salary will be £34,220 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
