UQ Centre for Health Services Research

The UQ Centre for Health Services Research (CHSR) is one of five Research Centres within the Faculty of Medicine. Established in 2017, the primary purpose of the Centre is to improve the delivery of health care through research which examines health systems performance and identifies mechanisms to improve access, effectiveness and efficiency.  The Centre has research strengths in telehealth, geriatric medicine and aged care, renal medicine, clinical trial design and administration, health economics and biostatistics and engages over 30 academic staff, 20 professional staff and 30 higher degree research students. The Centre works closely with the other Research Centres in the Faculty of Medicine (UQDI, UQCCR, UQ CHRC), with the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences and with Metro South and Metro North Hospital and Health Services.

The UQ CHSR is located on the Herston Campus of the University of Queensland, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital Campus, with activities based in the Metro North and Metro South Hospital and Health Service Districts, and associated with research activities across Australia and internationally.

About This Opportunity

This primary purpose of this position is to support the growing health economics program within the CHSR, strengthening the economic evaluation and implementation aspects of health services programs. The successful candidate will work on directed and independent research projects leading to publications and impact on policy and practice of health service.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting academic or contract research, including the statistical modelling of costs, cost-benefit analysis of health service programs and cost-effectiveness/cost-utility analysis.
  • The development of working papers and manuscripts to publication in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Participation in the preparation of research grants and protocols.
  • Working with supervisors to foster the Centre’s relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

This position is located at our Herston Campus, UQ’s core campus for clinical health teaching and research.  Sharing premises with royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the QIMR Berghofer Medical research Institute, the campus houses a vibrant clinical and research community that delivers innovative and contemporary research and education programs in a clinical academic environment.

Conveniently located just minutes from Brisbane’s city centre, there is access to multiple public transport connections, onsite parking and cycling facilities.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an emerging researcher who wishes to develop a career in health economics and evaluation.

Alongside a PhD, or near PhD completion, in a relevant discipline related to health economics, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Highly developed skills in quantitative analyses and interpretation of data.
  • Experience with the use of econometric and statistical software packages such as STATA, R and/or SAS.
  • An ability to conduct independent research and develop and complete scientific publications.
  • Previous experience working in a research intensive environment.
  • An ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals and organisations within and beyond the Centre and Faculty

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 18 months at Research Academic level A or B, dependant on experience.

The full-time equivalent base salary at Level A will be in the range $69,342 – $92,782 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be in the range of $81,131- $108,555).

The full-time equivalent base salary at Level B will be in the range $97,590– $115,888 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be in the range of $114,181- $135,590).
