Postdoctoral Researcher in Microglia and Neurodegeneration Research

06.11.2020, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The laboratory of Prof. Dr. Stefan Lichtenthaler studies the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on cell surface proteases, such as ADAM10 and BACE1, as well as the role of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease pathology. Specifically, the lab uses proteomic, biochemical and molecular and cell biological techniques as well as animal models. More information is found on our webpage: www.dzne.de/lichtenthaler We offer excellent projects and training in neurodegeneration research. We are an international and interdisciplinary team, are part of several larger research consortia (e.g. DFG-funded excellence cluster SyNergy in Munich and a European JPND project) and are located in the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Munich-Großhadern (DZNE).

Your tasks:

Recently, several Alzheimer risk genes (e.g. TREM2) have been discovered which are selectively expressed in microglia, the brain-resident immune cells. As part of an international JPND research consortium, you will elucidate the mechanism and function of different microglia-related Alzheimer risk gene variants. To achieve this goal, you will perform research with human monocyte-derived microglia (MDMi) and with acutely isolated microglia using magnetic activated cell sorting (MACS). Functional and mechanistic studies with the different cell types will include phagocytosis and cytokine assays as well as biochemical assays (e.g. ELISA, Western blots) and work with animal models and ex vivo models (e.g. organotypic brain slices).

Qualifications and experience:

You have a PhD in neurobiology, molecular biology or a related field and experience with primary cell culture (e.g. microglia, neurons, astrocytes, slice culture), demonstrated by publications. Experience with mouse experiments, electrophysiology, organotypic slice cultures, 3D cultures or iPS cells is an advantage as is a good knowledge of neuroscience. You are familiar with biochemical assays such as Western blots. You are creative, highly motivated and you are able to work independently. Essential qualities include fluency in English, previous international experience and a strong team spirit.

Appointment is full time and will be initially for two years with the possibility of renewal. We give priority to severely disabled applicants with essentially equal qualifications.

We are looking forward for your application!

Applications including motivation letter, CV, publication list and two recommendation letters should be sent as a single document via e-mail to:
