Job description

The lab for Functional Genomics and Applied Bioinformatics at Ghent University is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to study the role of long non-coding RNAs in cancer.

Project background

The human genome is pervasively transcribed and produces thousands of non-coding RNA transcripts, the majority of which are so-called long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). LncRNA expression profiles can be highly tissue specific, making them attractive as candidate biomarkers or targets for therapy. While the exact function of most lncRNAs is still unknown, many were shown to play important roles in gene regulation and impact various cancer hallmarks. Our lab recently demonstrated that the melanoma-specific lncRNA SAMMSON is essential for melanoma cell survival and may serve as a novel therapeutic target for treatment of melanoma, underscoring the importance and relevance of lncRNA research.

The applicant will (help) establish new wet-lab technologies and methods to study lncRNA function in cancer including high-throughput CRISPR-interference, CRISPR library screens and various RNA pull-down strategies. The candidate will apply these methods to gain new insights in the function of lncRNAs and identify novel therapeutic targets in cancer.

Research lab

The research is embedded in a multi-disciplinary team of computational biologists and wet lab scientists, with access to state-of-the art facilities for sequencing, single cell analysis, tissue culture, animal modeling and high-performance computing. The research lab is part of the Center for Medical Genetics at Ghent University and the Cancer Research Institute Ghent.

Profile of the candidate

The applicant is expected to have a strong background in molecular biology. Experience with RNA pull-down, CRISPR, high-throughput screening technologies, xenografts or animal models is a plus. Excellent English writing and communication skills are mandatory. Experience in coaching students and technicians is a plus.
