DESCRIPTION

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology in the College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified Postdoctoral Scholars to work in the Melis lab. This lab is looking to hire two or more qualified candidates. The Melis lab's focus is in the field of photosynthesis and metabolism. The lab works with land plants, microalgae, cyanobacteria, and non-oxygenic (anaerobic) photosynthetic bacteria. The platform includes most aspects of photosynthesis, beginning with organism cultivation, the efficiency of light absorption and utilization, electron transport and biochemical energy generation, and chloroplast and cellular metabolism. Included are the biophysics and biochemistry of the process, the molecular biology and genetics of the organisms, as well as scale ups in the cultivation of the various organisms for product generation. Work in the lab focuses on the use of photosynthetic microorganisms for the generation of renewable chemicals and biopharmaceuticals.

Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral researcher will work as part of a team to introduce heterologous genes into photosynthetic microbes and to transform these microorganisms into cell factories for product generation. The project entails construction of optimized expression vectors, transformation, and biochemical, molecular and physiological characterization of the resulting transformants. Additional duties of the role will include, but are not limited to:
• Preparing manuscripts for publication in refereed journals
• Presenting results at lab meeting and scientific conferences
• Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

Basic Qualifications (must be met at the time of application):
Candidates must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation or be enrolled in an accredited PhD, or equivalent international degree.

Additional Qualifications (must be met by start date):
PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date. The candidate may have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.

Preferred Qualifications (must be met by start date):
• Demonstrated expertise in the fields of microbiology, cloning, and transformation
• Demonstrated expertise in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, E-coli and cyanobacteria
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
• Demonstrated ability to produce scientific results and to publish papers in international peer- reviewed journals

Appointment:
This position reports to Dr. Anastasios Melis. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
