Postdoctoral Scholarship on the Management of Acute Sinusitis in General Practice.
University of Oslo Department of General Medicine
Norway

Postdoctoral scholarship on the management of acute sinusitis in general practice.

About the position

At the Department of General Medicine, Department of Health and Society (HELSAM), there is a vacancy as a postdoctoral fellow (50%) for four years in the project Better treatmentfor Acute Sinusitis In primary health care (BASIC). For the project, we seek two PhD fellows with relevant medical or other health background.

Background

Antibiotic resistance is a major and growing problem. The use of antibiotics increases the risk of resistance and maintenance. It is therefore important to keep the antibiotic use low and not to use antibiotics unnecessarily.

Acute sinusitis is the respiratory tract infection that causes the most use of antibiotics in general practice. The condition alone accounts for about 10% of the antibiotic use, although antibiotics have minimal effect on sinusitis. There is a lack of knowledge as to why the use of antibiotics is so high in this condition. A Norwegian pilot study has found that antibiotic eye drops work better than oral antibiotics against sinusitis symptoms, and there is reason to believe that eye drops are less resistant to resistance than oral treatment. In order to provide safe answers on whether eye drops are a safe and effective treatment, a randomized controlled trial in general practice must be performed. The total use of antibiotics has been reduced in Norway in the last six years. There is no knowledge of what diagnoses this reduction applies, and any negative effects of the reduction.

About the project

The BASIC project consists of three work packages:

An interview study of patients and doctors and a national survey among a representative sample of the population on understanding, handling and healing in sinusitis.

A randomized controlled trial in general practice to determine the effect of chloramphenicol eye drops on sinusitis symptoms.

A registry study to investigate the use of antibiotics in sinusitis in Norway, complications after sinusitis handled in general practice, and the effect of possible reduced antibiotic use in sinusitis.

The protocol is available at www.med.uio.no/helsam/forskning/prosjekter/bedre-behandling-bihulebetennelse/index.html (Document: "Project description BASIC")

The project has received funding from the Research Council of Norway. Two PhD fellows (see other call for proposals) and this postdoctoral fellow shall be employed.

More about the position

The postdoctoral fellow will mainly be associated with work package 2, and to some extent work package 3. The PhD candidates will be part of a well-established research group (the Antibiotic Center for Primary Medicine) where supervisors also participate.

The Antibiotic Center for Primary Medicine (ASP) is a national competence center funded by the Norwegian Directorate of Health. The center conducts extensive courses and information activities both for health personnel and the general population. The center is also organized as a research group under the Department of General Medicine, Department of Health and Society, University of Oslo. The research group has several other research projects with nearby themes, and it has extensive experience in carrying out similar projects.

The position is basically a 50% position with duration 1 October 2019 - 30 September 2023.

Employment in a position as a postdoctoral fellow aims to qualify researchers for work in a permanent scientific position.
