Postdoctoral studies in systems biology of mRNA translation in cancer (scholarship)

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer is carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

 

Research group
The Department of Oncology-Pathology is searching for a post-doctoral fellow to work with Dr Ola Larsson, and co-workers to study the role of mRNA translation in cancer. Description of the project
Rewiring of mRNA translation in both cancer and stromal cells is an essential feature during development of cancer. Due to e.g. the strong energy requirement for protein synthesis there is a link between control of mRNA translation and cell metabolism. This project is focused on understanding how mRNA translation is altered in cancer and how this is paralleled by changes in cell metabolism. Studies will include both in-vitro models and patient samples with the overarching goal of understanding mechanisms coordinating changes in mRNA translation and cell metabolism, identification of drug targets for anti-cancer therapy and characterization of subsets of patients who would benefit from such therapy.

 

Qualifications of the applicant
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, with an outstanding completed PhD thesis (or equivalent) and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate should be capable of generating novel ideas, acquire knowledge independently and possess sufficient computational skills to evaluate and develop new methods for analysis of large scale data sets acquired using next-generation sequencing and/or metabolomics approaches. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. At least one paper in a high quality international peer-reviewed journal is necessary to be considered and additional academic merits are also considered. Because of the scope of the project, knowledge and experience in bioinformatics and biostatistics including programming in languages such as R is required. Previous experience with analysis of data from next-generation sequencing on a nucleotide level is strongly preferred. Experience in analysis of large scale gene expression data sets is an advantage and knowledge in post-transcriptional mechanisms for regulation of gene expression and/or cell metabolism is also a strong merit. In addition, personal suitability will be a factor in the selection process.

 

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
To qualify, the applicant must hold a doctor’s degree in biostatistics/bioinformatics or similar (or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate). Applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the last date for applications should be given priority. Candidates who have completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if special grounds exist.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

 

Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within four years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt. The amount is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six-month basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
