Postdoctoral Teaching & Learning Fellow in Biomedical Engineering University of British Columbia School of Biomedical Engineering Canada

UBC School of Biomedical Engineering Postdoctoral Teaching & Learning Fellow

The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, has an immediate, full-time opening for a Postdoctoral Teaching and Learning Fellow. The Fellow will be responsible for modifying, restructuring and creating laboratory module and project materials for a Biomedical Engineering Laboratory course, which is part of the new Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program. The Fellow will work closely with faculty, educational researchers, graduate academic assistants and undergraduate students to implement course transformation, and to evaluate the effect of educational practices on student learning.

This position will be jointly funded by SBME and the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF), with the goal of implementing and evaluating a problem-based approach in an experiential learning-focused undergraduate engineering course. Initially, the Fellow will be involved in creating new laboratory module and project materials and modifying existing content in areas including cellular bioengineering and bioinformatics. This work will be done in collaboration with graduate academic assistants, and with consultation from local industry and research groups. Teaching opportunities complementary to the course development work may be possible given permission from the SBME Director, and would be factored into the assigned workload. The Fellow will also be involved in creating and implementing evaluation tools to measure the effect of a problem-based approach on student learning. The ideal Fellow has expertise in a Biomedical Engineering discipline, as well as knowledge and demonstrated experience in relevant teaching methods and research on learning. The Fellow must have completed a PhD within the last five years in a Biomedical Engineering or related discipline, and be keen to improve learning and to contribute to disciplinebased education research. Since most Fellows have limited prior experience in science or engineering education research, resources at the Centre for Teaching and Learning Technologies (CTLT) are available to help the successful incumbent develop the necessary skill set quickly.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The Fellow will be appointed up to one year with the possibility of extension subject to performance and funding availability.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter, CV, teaching statement and contact information for three references to gabrielle.lam@ubc.ca. Applicants who wish to learn more about the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering are encouraged to visit https://www.bme.ubc.ca/. Applications will be reviewed commencing June 15, 2019, and will continue until the position has been filled.
