Job description

The Department of Forensic Medicine seeks to appoint a professor within the area of application of genetic and molecular methods with forensic relevance at the Section of Forensic Genetics.

When considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of forensic genetics or areas relevant to this.

The applicant is expected to lead original scientific research addressing fundamental questions in forensic genetics and/or medical genetics, with a particular focus on the application of genetic investigations to forensics.

The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise with modern genetic laboratory methods, including massively parallel sequencing and analysis of large data sets.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Research-based public-sector consultancy may be required

Required qualifications

Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline.
  • A solid list of publications in both high ranking international generalist journals as well as discipline-specific journals.
  • Experience in research-based teaching, e.g.  demonstrated experience in supervision of master students, PhD students, post docs and assistant professors.
  • Management of research and other management functions, e.g. experience in the management of junior researchers and technical staff and ideally of larger projects and/or research programs

The applicant is expected to have a future interest in forensic genetics, and it is an advantage if the applicant has previous expertise related to the field, e.g.:

  • Expertise in the use of DNA for identification of individuals and organisms, ideally with human identification.
  • Expertise in the use of DNA from degraded complex material.
  • Experience or knowledge with validation of novel DNA based methods, preferably for forensic or clinical use.
  • Experience in the work of molecular genetic laboratories according to international guidelines and standards, preferably experience with working in an accredited laboratory (e.g. ISO 17025 accreditation).

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills. The position requires collaboration with a number of external partners and collaborators. Hence, the applicant needs to be able to:

  • Facilitate and participate in international research collaborations
  • Facilitate and participate in outreach activities, e.g. experience with collaboration with government and/or other national stakeholders

It is an advantage, if the applicant has an successful record of attracting external funding

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
