Professor in Palliative Care and Rehabilitation (combined position)



A combined position as professor (45% time) and as senior consultant (55% time) across the fields of palliative care and rehabilitation is vacant at the Danish Knowledge Centre for Rehabilitation and Palliative Care (REHPA), University of Southern Denmark and at Odense University Hospital, respectively. The position is vacant from November 1, 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.


The position includes strategic research direction, research leadership, research primarily within palliative care and related fields, authority consultancy, and scientific as well as popular dissemination.


In accordance with REHPA’s profile as a cross scientific centre, the candidate must have an academic background in e.g. health or social sciences or the humanities.




REHPA is a governmentally financed, national, research-based knowledge centre anchored in Region of Southern Denmark (Odense University Hospital) and at the University of Southern Denmark (the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Clinical Research). REHPA contributes to the development of evidence-based practice within the field of rehabilitation and palliative care to the benefit of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases, including relatives and carers. The work carried out at REHPA is an interaction between research-based mapping, intervention, evaluation, consultancy, and dissemination. Leadership characteristics and work environment


The position will contribute to the fulfillment of REHPA’s strategy, in particular by developing research-based knowledge within the field of palliative care for people afflicted with life-threatening diseases (i.e. cancer, heart, lung and neurodegenerative diseases including dementia and others). It is important to lead the Palliative Care Research Group in a positive and ambitious way. Moreover, it is important to disseminate new knowledge both internally and externally with support from REHPAs Communication and Networking Group. The candidate will be expected to ensure a close cooperation with REHPAs Rehabilitation Research Group and the Clinical Team responsible for REHPAs clinical courses.

Description of the vacant position


The successful post holder will be responsible for ensuring a coherent strategic research direction, focusing on palliative care, and will contribute to interdisciplinary research, primarily through leadership of fellow researchers in the Palliative Care Research Group. The position leaves room for developing certain areas of palliative care/rehabilitation that are of special interest to the applicant. Candidates will be expected to be able to create continuous renewal within the field of palliative care, to include, engage and motivate the researchers and to develop and keep an ideal analytical standard for research and organizational processes. The strategic work involves the ability to maintain and establish central networks among internal and external collaborators and to work for an open working environment as well as an open dialogue regarding knowledge sharing within REHPA and outside.


Research leadership profile


Candidates will be expected to have proven research leadership skills, and since the post holder will be part of REHPA’s management team, candidates must be able to evidence their strategic and organizational skills as well. Furthermore, because the position involves training, motivating, and supporting a research group in an environment of close collaboration with REHPAs other groups, candidates must be able to participate in and facilitate various forms of teamwork. Candidates will be expected to have a motivational style of leadership and a strong, impactful personality.


Job description


The preferred candidate will be expected to:


    Develop quality research in the field of palliative care and rehabilitation

    Ensure basis for the productive output from the Palliative Care Research Group through support, inspiration and focused research management

    Contribute to REHPA’s existing strong profile and positive work environment in close collaboration with colleagues

    Prioritize, underpin and develop REHPA projects in close relation to the overall strategy and through dialogue with REHPA colleagues

    Facilitate communication and cooperation within the Palliative Care Research Group, the Rehabilitation Research Group, the Clinical Team and the Communication and Networking Group

    Instruct, supervise and examine undergraduate, post-graduate and Ph.D. students

    Ensure knowledge sharing – internally as well as in the wider society nationally and globally

    Handle administrative tasks related to the position as Professor




Potential candidates will be expected to have:


    A proven track record of research in accordance with the grade of a professor

    Demonstrated (international) research excellence

    Proven ability to provide leadership of research groups as well as ability to operate in leadership roles at centre, faculty and university levels

    Ability and willingness to attract external funding on a larger scale and to lead research projects

    A clear, well-developed strategy for sustained high quality research that results in scientific publications and develops the field of palliative care research in relation to rehabilitation

    A commitment to share insights and knowledge in the public debate and to take societal responsibility

    A track record of making a conceptual, instrumental, as well as a capacity building impact at a national as well as international level

    Knowledge within the field of health, social and humanistic sciences and experience with palliative care processes as well as clinical practices, and understanding of rehabilitation

    Ability to speak and write in Danish and English.

The position is a full Professorship with split affiliation at Department of Clinical Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (45% Professorship) and at Odense University Hospital (55% Senior Consultant (AC), in accordance with REHPA’s organizational guidelines for research positions.


Place of employment: REHPA is situated in Nyborg, Funen, Denmark. REHPA has local office facilities in all five regions of Denmark. The place of employment for this specific position will be REHPA, Copenhagen, but the post holder must be prepared to travel within Denmark regularily.


Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the agreements between the Danish Ministry of Finance (Professorship), respectively, Regionernes Lønnings- og Takstnævn (Senior Consultant, AC) and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). A special tax scheme is offered to researchers/professors recruited abroad.
