The following position is open in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu

Professor in Psychiatry for a fixed-term period of five years

Job Description and Location:

The position concerned is a fixed-term (1.1.2022-31.12.2026) Professorship in Psychiatry and it belongs to the Research Unit of Clinical Neuroscience at the Faculty of Medicine and it is based on the agreement between the University of Oulu and the Hospital District of Lapland.

Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Skills:

The professor will be a dynamic individual who provides vision, leadership, and mentoring in the field of Psychiatry. The main duties are

  • plan, develop and carry out regional specialist training in psychiatry
  • act as an instructor for specialist trainees in psychiatry
  • participate in teaching in the Faculty of Medicine
  • supervise and develop scientific research in psychiatry, especially in the field of mental health services (remote services)

Qualifications of successful candidate include a doctoral degree, appropriate scientific competence, experience in supervising scientific research, ability to give high quality education based on research and supervision of doctoral theses (see section 33, Universities’ Act).

When assessing the applicant’s merits, issues taken into consideration include scientific publications and other research achievements, teaching experience, pedagogical training, and other teaching merits. In addition, the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, practicality in the field, success in acquiring extramural funding, and international collaboration will be taken into consideration. The professor is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate training, and for the implementation of entrustable professional activities in the assessment of postgraduate trainee competence.

The teaching language in UO is Finnish and the clinical duties requires fluent Finnish.

The salary will be based on the levels 8-9 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The EUR salary will be approximately 6000-7300 per month.

  2. A complete list of publications following the guidelines of the Academy of Finland: Please mark the ten most important ones and include their DOI identifiers.
  3. Description of research merits (max 1 page)
  4. Description of teaching merits or a teaching portfolio (max 3 pages)
  5. Details regarding acquisition of research funds (max 2 pages) 
  6. An action plan including the applicant’s vision how to improve the research and teaching in the field of psychiatry (max 3 pages)

 A six-month trial period is applied to the position.

Reviewer Assessment

The selection process follows the University of Oulu professor recruitment guidelines. The Dean will nominate a recruiting committee to take care of the evaluation process. The candidates are subjected to publication analyses based on their publication lists. The candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation by minimum of two reviewers to be consulted regarding the merits of the applicants.

Interview and proposal by the recruitment committee

The recruiting committee will analyze the evaluations of the reviewer’s, interview the suitable candidates and make a proposal for appointment.

Official Employment

Based on the proposal by the recruiting committee the Dean will make her proposition to the Vice Rector for Research, who in turn will make the nomination to the post.
