The University seeks to appoint a professor with special responsibilities within equine orthopedic surgery with special emphasis on advanced diagnostic imaging to the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences to commence as soon as possible. At the end of the 5-year period of employment, the professor is secured employment and remuneration as associate professor.

Job description 
When, considering applications for the professorship the main emphasis will be on the main aspects:  

 

The applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific production on an international level within the area of equine orthopedic surgery and related subjects such as musculoskeletal inflammation, pain and traumatology.  

 

The applicant’s experience with orthopedic surgery and advanced diagnostic imaging incl. attraction of funding and practical implementation of advanced imaging modalities in an equine referral hospital setting   

 

Orthopedic conditions are a major challenge in equine veterinary medicine. Precise and accurate diagnoses are the prerequisite for instigation of correct therapies, be it medical or surgical. Use of advanced imaging such as CT, MRI and scintigraphy is now commonplace in equine orthopedic surgery for obtaining diagnoses and for planning/performing orthopedic surgery. The professor must focus on equine orthopedic diseases including orthopedic surgery and advanced imaging  He/she is expected to assist in obtaining funding for and to implement a smoothly operating advanced diagnostic imaging unit in collaboration with Section of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, and to collaborate with fellow researchers in the section, the department as a whole, and with external partners to integrate equine orthopedic research and advanced imaging methodologies into the field of equine clinical orthopedics.  

 

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination  

  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination 

  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers, residents and veterinary students  

  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate  

  • Academic assessments  

  • Research-based teaching with associated examination duties   

  • Professional assessment work   

  • Attraction of funding for and implementation of an advanced imaging unit in collaboration with colleagues at Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and the director of The Large Animal Teaching Hospital. The professor will serve as daily leader of the unit, once it is established.

  • Patient care and hospital service management at specialist level in The Large Animal Teaching Hospital.

  • Out-of-hours surgical emergency service in The Large Animal Teaching Hospital.

  • Collaboration with section of Veterinary Imaging to establish a residency program in large animal imaging under The European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging

The Professor With Special Responsibilities Within Equine Orthopaedic Surgery with Special Emphasis on Advanced Diagnostic Imaging will perform these tasks under the general responsibility of the Professor of Large Animal Surgery.  

 

Required qualifications 

The successful applicant should be able to:  

  • Be DVM and have a Danish authorization as veterinarian

  • Hold a PhD degree 

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline 

  • Be ECVS/ACVS boarded/board eligible or hold similar specialist qualifications/experiences within large animal surgery  

  • Management of research and other management functions, including attraction of external funding 

  • Research-based teaching  

  • Patient care and hospital service management from an equine referral center/hospital, experience with a wide range of elective and emergency procedures in surgery and orthopedics  

  

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills. If Danish is not the first language, the applicant is expected to obtain sufficient Danish skills within 1-2 years.  

 

Terms of employment 

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013)
