One postdoctoral position in Chemical Biology and Organic Chemistry for the Mass Spectrometric Discovery of Bioactive Microbiome Metabolites

Job Description: The position is available in the laboratory of Associate Professor Daniel Globisch at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Uppsala University in Sweden (https://www.ilk.uu.se/research-groups/biomarker-discovery/). The Globisch laboratory is an international and multidisciplinary research group with a focus on the development of new Chemical Biology methodologies to enhance the scope of quantitative and qualitative metabolomics-based research (Example literature: Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2018, 57, 13805-13809; Chem. Sci. 2018, 9, 6233-6239; Chem. Comm. 2019, 55, 9080-9083; check homepage for updates). The project will investigate microbiome-derived metabolites using chemoselective metabolite modification methods and mass spectrometric analysis. This project is co-funded by the laboratory of Associate Senior Lecturer Mikael Sellin (https://www.imbim.uu.se/research-groups/infection-and-defence/sellin-mikael/) for analysis of bacterial infections in intestinal organoid model systems. This highly interdisciplinary project will include techniques at the interface of Chemistry and Biology using a combination of Organic Chemistry, mass spectrometric analysis of metabolites, and microbiology. Our team is currently searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with passion and enthusiasm for science to support our interdisciplinary projects elucidating microbiome metabolism using mass spectrometry and the development of chemoselective probes.

Qualifications: The applicant must hold a PhD degree in chemical, biological or pharmaceutical sciences and should have expertise in at least three of the following areas: Chemical Biology, Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, and mass spectrometric analysis of metabolites. The PhD degree must have been received within three years at the time of employment.

Desirably/meritorious: Good written and spoken English skills and the ability to work in a team are required. Personal suitability will receive special attention in the selection process.

Work tasks: The selected candidate will perform chemical synthesis of chemoselective probes and metabolites, metabolite extraction, mass spectrometric analysis using UPLC-MS/MS techniques, and bacterial cultures. The postdoctoral position will be 100% research.

Application: The application, preferably written in English, should be submitted online and must include the following documents:

  • Motivation letter with research interests and expertise as well as one paragraph on recent developments in mass spectrometric Chemical Biology or Microbiome research.
  • Curriculum Vitae with complete publication list
  • Copy of the PhD certificate
  • Contact information for at least two references
