PhD Student in Global Health

The employment is part of the research group UGHRIS (Uppsala Global Health Research in Implementation and Sustainability) at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health. The research group conducts transdisciplinary research on global health and sustainable development (https://www.kbh.uu.se/research/ghris/)

Duties/Project description: The PhD project focuses on the impact of urban environments on maternal mental health in low- and middle-income countries and is a collaboration with Addis Continental Institute of Public Health in Ethiopia. The project is grounded in global health, but is transdisciplinary and includes theories and methods from social anthropology and cultural geography, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods.

The position also includes to participate and finalize research applications. Teaching as part of the PhD training is expected (up to 120 hours in total according to local regulations).

The project is part of Uppsala university Center: Women’s Mental Health during the Reproductive lifespan, WoMHeR as one of 16 PhD projects within a research school. Requirements: The candidate who will be offered the position should have:

  • A Master’s degree in a for the project relevant area, i.e. global health, sociology, cultural geography, or a medical exam
  • An interest in global maternal mental health and health equity
  • Experience form collecting, organizing and handling quantitative or qualitative data with different software, eg. Excel, SPSS, R or NVivo
  • High proficiency of spoken and written English
  • Experience of writing research applications
  • Proof of independence and participation in previous research projects
  • Availability to undertake fieldwork in Ethiopia

Ability to collaborate, work independently and individual suitability will be given priority. The position requires that the candidate is accepted within the postgraduate doctoral programme. Additional qualifications: Favorable for the position are:

  • Experience and knowledge about research methods to be used within the project, such as handling and analysis of large datasets, systematic reviews and qualitative analysis
  • Research experience within mental health
  • Experience of working with GIS
  • Experience of academic publishing
  • Proficiency in Amharic

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.  

Starting date: 01-10-2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7.

Scope of employment: 100 %, with possibility to part-time in combination with clinical duties.
