Executive Associate Dean

Reporting directly to the Founding Dean, the Executive Associate Dean (EAD) serves as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Indiana University Richard M Fairbanks School of Public Health (FSPH). In the absence of the Dean, the EAD is the next in succession for decision-making. As the COO, the EAD provides strategic and operational direction to all aspects of enrollment management, curriculum administration and student success and other areas as assigned by the Dean.

Primary Leadership Accountabilities:

A. School-wide leadership and operations management: As the Chief Operations Officer for the FSPH, the EAD working closely with the Dean, takes responsibility for the efficient and productive operation of the school. Working with the Department Chairs and other members of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Academic Leadership Team (ALT), the EAD develops and refines operating policies and plans to achieve enrollment, academic and fiscal goals and objectives. Assumes delegated authority from the Dean to lead and execute those actions necessary to implement the strategic and operational plans of the school. Represents the Dean to internal and external groups as necessary.

B. Academic Affairs: Working with faculty, students, alumni and practice partners and ALT leaders, assure the integrity, relevance and value of the FSPH academic degree and programs. Assure that a continuous quality improvement process is focused on creating a best-in-class experience for FSPH students and that faculty are consistently recognized among the top in their field of expertise. Conduct periodic assessment and evaluation of department and program level quality. Take responsibility for developing a plan for continuously improving national and regional rankings and public reputation scores.

C. Faculty Affairs: Working with academic and faculty leaders to assure that FSPH systems and procedures enhance and support a positive faculty experience and enable excellence in teaching, research, and service. Work with chairs and program directors to assure the sufficient and effective use of instructional talent and provide school level direction for recruitment and retention of faculty. Develop and oversee the periodic assessment and documentation of faculty work and compliance with university, school and departmental requirements and guidance. Work with chairs and individual faculty as appropriate to assure a plan for personal growth and excellence.

Specific Example Responsibilities:

1. Serve as the full partner with the Dean in the strategic direction and operation of the School.
2. Working closely with the Dean, establish, monitor and report on the development and progress of the strategic plan for the School. Operationally define and create accountability systems for goal accountability and success.
3. Working closely with chairs and program directors, develop annual and three-year enrollment projections and monitor and direct progress of recruitment and retention for both graduate and undergraduate programs on both the IUPUI and Fort Wayne campus.
4. Working closely with faculty leadership, coordinate the academic review process for the evaluation and modernization of curriculum changes and proposals; represent FSPH to IUPUI and IU committees in seeking approvals for new degrees and changes for degrees, certificates and programs.
5. Work with faculty, chairs and program directors to assure that the curriculum is contemporary, relevant and delivered in a manner consistent with the standards expected by our faculty, accrediting bodies and peers.
6. Work with chairs and faculty to administer faculty affairs in a manner that supports our faculty and increases the value of our educational experience to our students and stakeholders. Act as the dean’s office representative to the Promotion and Tenure Committee.
7. Lead the efforts necessary to support the continuous accreditation status of the school through the periodic preparation of renewal applications and correspondence with accreditation bodies on behalf of the school.
8. Be the dean’s office representative in all matters related to student admission, dismissal, and academic misconduct. Make recommendations for appeals and exceptions to policy.
9. Take responsibility for the periodic publication of data necessary for the monitoring and evaluation of school progress including data regarding student enrollment, credit hours, and financial indicators.
10. Working with chairs, administer the faculty evaluation process to include periodic faculty activity reports, annual evaluations and productivity analyses to include alignment of faculty productivity to appointment letter metrics. Work with faculty and chairs to develop remediation actions and development plans.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must have a terminal degree and be qualified for a faculty appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in one of the School’s five departments.
