Position Summary:
AUACOM presents an opportunity to join a collaborative community of basic scientists and physicians working to shape the physicians of tomorrow. The successful candidate will join the Department of Pathophysiology. The department is mostly engaged in teaching activities while scientific research is encouraged. The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral skills and strong record of teaching. Qualifications include an MBBS, M.D/DO or PhD or equivalent degree in Physiology certification. Candidates who have teaching experience and research interests in education, and, how effective teaching techniques are adapted to different learning styles are of particular interest. This position requires an understanding of U.S. MD education requirements. Candidates must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at AUA.

Responsibilities:

As is directed by the Executive Dean of Basic Sciences, or the Chair of your Department.

 

  1. Be responsible for guiding assigned students in meeting their respective educational goals, exercising professional judgement based upon the faculty member's knowledge of the subject matter, needs of the individual students, teaching strategies of AUA, interpersonal relationships and teaching theory.
  2. The successful candidate will provide strong, innovative teaching in physiology, that provides insights into the understanding of the basic principles and pathophysiology of common diseases.
  3. Able to develop and deliver teaching content incorporating evidence based pedagogical methods using active learning techniques in the classroom and small group.
  4. Formulate learning outcomes aligned with assessments, small group activities and other learning sessions
  5. Design small group activities integrating physiology topics in a system-based curriculum that incorporates all the relevant basic science disciplines of anatomy, biochemistry, molecular science, Pathology, microbiology, immunology, and pharmacology
  6. Collaborate with basic and clinical science educators in coordinating   inter-disciplinary integration of physiology/ pathophysiology with other disciplines within system-based courses
  7. Contribute actively to developing formative assessments and summative assessments
  8. Facilitate small group discussion based on integrated content other than physiology
  9. Assess and grade students' achievement of learning outcomes.
  10. Use students' feedback to improve teaching.
  11. Participate in, revise and/ develop courses and curricula.
  12. Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to students, including mentoring.
  13. Participate in academic programs.
  14. Direct and participate in educational programs of the Department within which the faculty member is assigned.
  15. Provide information and assistance on academic programs of the College of Medicine as may be requested.
  16. Compile and/ or research data as may be assigned.
  17. Attend and participate in campus, departmental program, meetings, and activities of the College of Medicine.
  18. Remain current in respective field(s) of study.
  19. Provide lectures, tutoring, and generally impart knowledge to students at the College of Medicine in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
  20. Carry out other duties and responsibilities consistent with the position of a faculty member of a medical school as may arise from time to time and as assigned by AUA through the Executive Dean of Basic Sciences, the Chair of the department or such other person as is duly authorized by AUA.

Service to the university:

  1. Participate in faculty meetings
  2. Actively participate in faculty development programs
  3. Assume administrative duties including service on standing committees of the school either in an elected or an appointed capacity
  4. Contribute to the local community through community outreach activities sponsored by the institution

Research:

  1. Attend scientific meetings at least once a year

Qualifications and essential requirements:

  1. MBBS, MD/DO or PhD in Physiology.
  2. Teaching experience in a similar position within the US, Canada or UK institution of higher education or medical training. 
  3.  
  4. Excellent working knowledge of United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) content areas relevant to physiology/ pathophysiology.
  5. A minimum of five years teaching experience in the pre-clinical curriculum at accredited universities
  6. Experience with evidence based pedagogical principles of teaching and use of technology in teaching and learning
  7. Demonstrate commitment to support the mission and vision of the university and diversity of students and faculty of the institution
  8. Outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, presenting and collaboration with students, faculty members and others.
  9. Demonstrate ability to interact professionally, and cultural sensitivity.
  10. Ability to advise and train remediating students
  11. Organize and schedule appointments and assignments
  12. Ability to foster a co-operative work environment
  13. Demonstrate skill to work independently, complete assignments under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities.
  14. Engage in scholarly activities as part of continuing education.

Skills:

  1. Experience with Microsoft 365, particularly PowerPoint and Word are required.
  2. Experience with audience response systems is an advantage
