The Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy, University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire a full-time employee as a Junior Specialist in Dr. Henry Ho’s lab. The lab uses an interdisciplinary approach to study the mechanisms of vertebrate embryonic development, tissue formation, and human structural birth defects. Successful candidates are expected to participate in three major categories of activities listed below:

1. RESEARCH (90% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist is expected to work independently under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI, Dr. Henry Ho) to conduct experiments investigating the role of Wnt5a-Ror signaling in normal and diseased states. The specific roles and duties include the structure-function study of the Ror receptor complex, the development of novel reporter constructs and cell lines, and the analysis of genetically modified mutant mice carrying mutations in components of the Wnt5a-Ror pathway. The Junior Specialist is given support and guidance for work assigned and will participate in ongoing projects, with individual responsibilities assigned in the lab. As the junior specialist gains expertise in experimental skills and makes substantial, novel discoveries, he/she will be expected to contribute to manuscript preparation. The position also involves assisting with general lab research operations and training of new lab members. The person hired needs to have ability to work as part of a team and be reasonably flexible in working hours in order to accommodate experimental schedules.

2. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist will give oral or poster presentations at departmental and other seminars, such as journal clubs and other activities.

3. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
Candidate is expected to help mentor undergraduate students in the lab, and to participate in laboratory and group meetings and academic activities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor degree in biological sciences or a related field. Must have bachelor’s degree by March 1, 2022.
• Knowledge of routine safe laboratory practices.
• Experience in the following lab techniques: mammalian cell culture, transfection, mouse colony management, molecular biology skills including DNA isolation and genotyping, protein biochemistry such as western blot analysis.
• Basic knowledge in signal transduction, developmental biology and Wnt signaling.
• Experience in record keeping/organization of large data set.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in flow cytometry

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Full time (100%) appointment. Initial appointment is for 12 months (short term); reappointment is pending satisfactory performance, needs of the research project, and sufficient funding.
