Research Associate in Medicine University of Cambridge

Applications are invited for two experimental researcher posts available from October 2023, one senior and one early-stage, each for initially 2 years within a new £9M UK-funded centre in Ubiquitous Optical Healthcare Technologies (ubOHT).

The researchers will be part of the NanoPhotonics group, which looks at translating advances in nanoscale assembly and nanophotonics interactions for societal impact. They will be part of a broad team of >20 researchers across the UK, and provide leadership opportunities and developing bridges to industry. The candidates will join a dynamic and diverse team that values collaboration. The role holders will develop different novel sensors using surface-enhanced Raman scattering and mid-IR absorption, using robust low-cost self-assembled plasmonic nanocavities. For recent work see https://www.np.phy.cam.ac.uk

Project: The Intelligent Toilet: Ubiquitous Optical Healthcare Technologies This project will continue our work building low-cost exquisitely-sensitive optical sensing devices using self-assembled plasmonic nanocavities. This will demand prior experience in molecular/bio sensing, microfluidics, optical-based molecular spectroscopy, and instrumentation. We therefore welcome applications with aligned scientific backgrounds. A rigorous approach to device quality control and data analysis would be extremely valuable, as well as experience of Raman or vibrational IR spectroscopies. Some background in machine learning, self-assembled monolayers and attachment, plasmonic self-assembly, electrochemistry, and technology translation would be advantageous.

Job requirements: Candidates will have, or be close to obtaining, a strong physics or chemistry PhD or a related discipline, with experience in molecular spectroscopy or low-cost instrumentation. In addition to proven experimental skills the candidate should ideally have experience in working across disciplinary boundaries. They should expect to be involved in both construction of new optical spectroscopy rigs using lasers and microfluidics as well as a variety of chemical sample preparations or synthesis. Experience in engaging with clinicians and/or instrumentation industries would be helpful.

The UK NanoPhotonics Centre (http://www.np.phy.cam.ac.uk) collaborates widely across the University of Cambridge including the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Physics of Medicine, Cancer Research UK, Chemical Engineering, Materials as well as many international partners, industry, with several major EU programmes. Recent publications can be seen on our website (above). Prof JJ Baumberg, FRS, is an acknowledged leader in discovering and assembling nanomaterials for novel photonics.

Appointment at research associate is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded). The research assistant salary (grade 5) falls within the range £28,929 to £33,348. The research associate (grade 7) salary falls within the range £35,308 to £43,155.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
