Description:

The Department of Medicine within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for two Director positions of the Master Teacher Program. The Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto is one of the oldest and largest in North America with over 940 full-time faculty members distributed across six fully affiliated teaching hospitals. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto and be a Clinician Teacher (CT), Clinician Educator (CE) or Clinician in Quality Improvement (CQI). The effective start date for the MTP Co-Director terms will be March 1, 2024, or an alternative date as mutually agreed upon. The duration of the contract will be 5 years, with potential opportunity for renewal once following successful review.

Faculty Development is a vital function of the Department of Medicine. The Master Teacher Program (MTP) has been providing health professionals education to faculty members for over two decades. The MTP serves to prepare faculty members, with a focus on busy Clinician Teachers, for their roles as teachers in the health care setting. The program, which offers instruction in educational theory and practical teaching skills with experiential practice, runs over two years, from September to May, one afternoon per week for each of two cohorts (maximum of 14 participants per cohort).  The Course Co-Directors prepare course content and attend sessions, facilitate discussion, present didactic materials, provide support for the projects leading to educational deliverables, update the curriculum, and evaluate the program. They also provide information and career counseling to prospective applicants, and mentor course participants and some alumni. Course Co-Directors review application materials and select the participants for each cohort on an annual basis.

The Course Co-Director must demonstrate sustained excellence in teaching with scholarship in education. They should be conversant in major topics and trends in teaching and education in Medicine and have an interest in health professions education. Both course Directors sit on the Education Executive Committee for the Department of Medicine.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Specialist or be eligible for certification in the RCPSC and licensure in Ontario.

The hospital site for the Program Director’s clinical activities will be one of the following fully affiliated University sites: Baycrest, Sinai Health System, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, and Women’s College Hospital. The Master Teacher Program Co-Director will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $25,000.

Applications will be accepted until January 15, 2024, 11:59PM EST. Should you be interested in this opportunity, please forward an up-to-date curriculum vitae, a letter of intent and the names and contact information of three referees to Monica Flak, Strategic Planning and Implementation officer via email at monica.flak@utoronto.ca.
