# Job Description We are seeking a lecturer in translational ageing research to join our highly productive and cross-disciplinary team of high-profile academics in the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology, home to the TwinsUK cohort and the new Centre for Ageing Resilience in a Changing Environment. Applicants will have a track record of internationally excellent research and will demonstrate the vision, expertise and drive to lead an independent research programme in to advance human ageing resilience, age-related disease and morbidity. The postholder could develop one of our research themes in biology of ageing, environmental influences on health, and / or digital health innovation. They will have a track record in collaborative working and bring their own collaborative network as well as being eager to integrate with our international collaborative network and reach out to other researchers across King’s health faculties, natural science and the Crick, and further afield. The Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology (DTR) has a strong track record of producing world class research and innovation, contributing to data and discovery science, and population health. The postholder will maximise the opportunities available to expand our position as a world leader. They will also have a role in educating future leaders in ageing science, coordinating Master project supervision within the department and supervising 2-3 projects a year themselves. The post holder will play a key role in disseminating use of our longitudinal resource to aid in education of new scientists in multi-omics and precision medicine, working with other departments across the faculty to identify jointly supervised projects related to ageing. With regard to undergraduate teaching, the post holder will have the opportunity to co-lead on modules on genetics or ageing within the medical school. The post holder might come with a range of quantitative backgrounds, for example genetic and or population epidemiology, biology/ ecology or socio-geographical quantitative analysis, but they will have a track record in ageing research. The post will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of ~ 70 as well as developing independent programs and expanding the departments existing network of worldwide collaborative research. The post will involve a contribution to directing and funding of a 4\* research programme. The applicant would be expected to deliver high quality research demonstrated by success with grant applications and high impact publications, as well as teaching in relevant undergraduate/Postgraduate programmes in the Department and the School. The post holder will take an active part in the management of the Department, and the TwinsUK Bioresource and training of junior staff and PhD students and organising internal meetings. This post will be offered as a permanent position. This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.# Key responsibilities **Key objectives** - Lead research programmes, as Principal Investigator, in relevant aspects of their specialist field and attract funding to them. - Promote work of the Department/School by presenting work at international meetings and conferences as invited speaker. - Bring specialist skills and expertise to pursue research focused on the translation and development of their specialist research area. - Build an independent research program focusing on their specific research area. • - Actively engage in administrative work in the Department/School as a member or chair of committees. - To supervise PhD and MD students. To raise support for PhD studentships to supplement those available through internal programmes. - To recognise opportunities for innovation and to work with the relevant body at KCL to exploit these. - To lead and inspire all staff within the post-holder’s remit - To manage all staff within the post-holder’s remit including staff recruitment, induction, performance management and staff appraisals. - To generate and manage grant income effectively - Attend and participate in appropriate research seminars/conferences within subject related areas. - Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department/School. **Communication & networking** - Communicate conceptual and complex ideas to a variety of audiences using appropriate media and methods. - Contribute and develop internal and external networks to develop a 4\* research programme. - Develop links with e.g. other educational and professional bodies to foster collaboration. - To communicate with those in academia and industry at the forefront of developments in the area of specific expertise - Participate in teaching programs within the College - Establish and maintain professional relationships with services within and external to the Department / Division / School / KCL **Decision making, planning & problem solving** - Contribute to part of an educational programme including setting standards and ensuring smooth operation, monitoring progress, quality assurance etc. - Contribute in the strategic planning of the Group/Division/Department and contribute to the wider strategic planning processes at School and College level. - Identify strategic development opportunities in teaching and research and development of these ideas. - Contribute to the overall management of the Department/Division - Identify and apply for sources of income from grant awarding bodies / industry - Manage income and grant expenditure - To be capable of making decisions and problem solving on a daily basis, using initiative, discretion, knowledge and experience **Service delivery** - Publish research in high quality peer-reviewed journals - Raise funds to support a 4\* research programme - Supervise undergraduate/graduate research students and ensure completion within allotted time-frame - Deliver high-quality teaching to graduate and undergraduate courses - To protect intellectual property as appropriate - To perform departmental administrative duties as required - Provide expert advice in the relevant research area. - Set the standards of service and ensure overall quality is maintained. Responsible for identifying needs of e.g. students, colleagues and external bodies, and ensuring these are met. **Analysis & research** - Determine relevant research objectives and prepare research proposals. - Contribute to the development of research strategies. - Carry out independent research and act as principal investigator and project leader. - Act as a referee and contribute to peer assessment. - Write or contribute to publications or disseminate research findings using other appropriate media. - To participate in the analysis and interpretation of research results - To research sources of funding to support research programme - To research innovation in area of specific expertise as appropriate - Make presentations at national or international conferences **Team work, teaching & learning support** - Manage and supervise scientific and technical staff where approprate - Support the Head of Department in the team effort to meet the strategic objectives and aims of the Department and School in all areas of work - Lead teams within areas of responsibility and foster a collaborative environment with other teams. - Contribute to design, develop and deliver a range of study programmes at various levels. - Develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students. - Ensure that course design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the Department, School, Faculty and College. **Sensory/physical demands & work environment** - The post-holder will work in an office and will use a PC for a substantial part of the time - The post-holder will work in a laboratory environment - Balance the pressures of teaching, research and administrative demands and competing deadlines. - Conduct risk assessments and take responsibility for the health and safety of students and others. **Pastoral care** - Provide pastoral support for research and technical staff working within the remit of the post-holder - Provide pastoral support for BSc, MSc, MD, PhD students - At all times show consideration to others - Ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the course of employment The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post. # Skills, knowledge, and experience **Essential criteria** 1. Proven record of publication in high impact journals 10. Experience of teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level **Desirable criteria** 1. Previous experience in the management of multi-disciplinary research staff 2. Evidence of internationally collaborative research 3. A capacity to communicate effectively with and influence the wider community, including non-academic stakeholders and public 4. Evidence of impact of previous research 5.
