PhD Position in Public Health Ghent University, Department of Public Health
Last application date: Jun 20, 2016 00:00 Job descriptionA position is available at the Department of Public Health for a highly motivated PhD student to work in an international research project. This is a full-time position for 4 years (pending a positive evaluation after 1 year). The presence of multimorbidity in patients with chronic conditions is associated with disease severity, lower quality of life and worse prognosis. The main aim of this PhD project is to study existing comorbidities (heart failure, stroke, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, peripheral artery disease, depression) in a large population of European patients with documented coronary heart disease. More specifically, the PhD fellow will estimate the magnitude of comorbid conditions in CHD patients, how they are interrelated, to what extent they share the same risk factors and clinical prognosis, and how they may affect health-related quality of life. Given the complex clinical approach to multimorbid patients, their therapeutic management is often suboptimal and not according to clinical guidelines. Due to the increased risk for recurrent events, optimizing secondary prevention through adequate treatment and intensifying healthy lifestyle advice, is of particular importance to this patient group. The cost-effectiveness of such optimized prevention in patients with comorbid conditions will be considered. The PhD fellow will be engaged in the international EUROASPIRE studies (European Action on Secondary Prevention through Intervention to Reduce Events); the fifth round of these multicenter surveys is currently enrolling the first patients. Profile of the candidate
