The Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Gothenburg now seeks to further strengthen its vibrant research community with a professorship devoted to the Molecular Cell Biology of Cancer. We are looking for an outstanding scientist with a strong international reputation. We offer an excellent research environment, which in the field of medicine is ranked as number two in Sweden and twelve in Europe (Shanghai rankings). The successful candidate will have access to laboratory space and state-of-the-art core facilities including cellular imaging, genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. A competitive start-up package will be made available after negotiations.

The Institute of Biomedicine is a part of the Sahlgrenska Academy (Faculty of Health) at the University of Gothenburg. The Institute is organized into six departments, active in both basic and clinical research. One of our key research areas is cancer and we presently harbour more than 20 research groups working within different areas of cancer research. The Institute of Biomedicine also houses the Sahlgrenska Cancer Center, a translational cancer research center affiliated with both the Sahlgrenska Academy and the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. A number of our research groups are involved in translational research projects, with a focus on transferring basic science findings to clinical therapy.

Molecular Cell Biology of Cancer

Specific subject description

Molecular Cell Biology of Cancer is the study of basic cellular processes and regulatory pathways related to oncogenic modification. The subject area is in the long term expected to contribute to improved care and treatment of affected patients.

Job assignments

The appointee is expected to pursue an active and internationally competitive research program within the field of Molecular Cell biology of Cancer. The professor is also expected to actively apply for external research funding. The position includes research and training of graduate students, to further develop and strengthen the area of Molecular Cell Biology of Cancer at our Institute. Together with colleagues, the applicant will take an active part in our teaching courses such as medicine and pharmacology, with a special emphasis on Molecular Cell Biology of Cancer. In addition, the appointee will be expected to perform other tasks normally associated with a professorship, including administrative duties, as well as various commissions of trust.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Demonstrated scientific and pedagogical skills.

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

The applicant must demonstrate internationally recognized scientific skills, specifically the knowledge of Molecular Cell Biology of Cancer. The applicant should also display pedagogical skills relevant to the subject. The primary assessment criterion is scientific skills. The second assessment criterion lays equal emphasis on administrative and pedagogical skills. Ability to collaborate as well as ability to interact with the Institute community will also be taken into consideration.

The successful applicant may also be asked to complete an educational training program within the first year of employment.
