Early Stage Researcher
The Faculty of Health Sciences operates at the Kuopio Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty offers education in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, as well as in some other central fields of the health care sector. The Faculty is research-intensive, and its internationally recognized research activities are closely linked to the strategic research areas of the University. There are approximately 2,500 degree students and about 450 PhD students in the Faculty. The number of staff adds up to almost 700 experts. http://www.uef.fi/en/uef/ttdk
The A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland is a research institute with research profile on molecular medicine of major diseases of high importance for health care. These diseases include cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolism-related diseases. The strong research sub-areas include:
- molecular and cellular mechanisms of diseases
- disease modelling
- prevention and therapy of the diseases: gene and cell-based therapy, pharmaceutical intervention
- in vitro and in vivo imaging
We are now inviting applications for an Early Stage Researcher position in A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, Kuopio Campus, www.uef.fi/aivi.
The research project is in the field of ultrastructural characterization of the brain after injury. The task of the applicant is to develop and apply new and advanced image processing methods for huge 3D electron microscopy datasets. This will allow long term applications, such as characterization and quantification of the ultrastructure of the brain tissue in healthy and pathological conditions. The ultimate goal will be modeling and correlation of the obtained data to diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) in order to improve the diagnostic potential of these techniques. The research work will be conducted in the Biomedical Imaging Unit at the A. I. Virtanen Institute. The candidate will be supervised by Academy Research Fellow, Dr Alejandra Sierra López in collaboration with Associate Professor Jussi Tohka´s and Professor Olli Gröhn’s research groups. We seek for a highly motivated person with an engineering/computation/physics background interested to work in a multidisciplinary project. The ideal candidate has experience and/or studies in signal processing, image processing or machine learning. Prior experience with medical or biological imaging is a plus but not required. The candidate is required to be proficient in English and have programming experience in Matlab and/or Python.
A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree.
