Opportunity at a Glance: 

Reporting to the Department of Clinical Medicine Chair the Associate/Full Professor is a member of the larger RUSM Dominica faculty.

The Department of Clinical Medicine teaches clinical skills to pre-clerkship students and helps to integrate clinical medicine with the basic science content of the Foundations of Medicine Curriculum. The Department goals focus on creating clinical context for the basic science lecture material across all semesters and introducing students to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competencies, adapted for pre-clinical medical students. Lecture and small group formats are used for curriculum delivery and faculty are expected to be proficient in teaching in both settings. Interviewing and physical examination skills labs, case-based small group learning, a robust Standardized Patient program, and high fidelity medical simulation using Laerdal SimMan3G technology, are all employed for the Clinical Skills curriculum delivery. In addition, RUSM pre-clinical students have a number of required activities with live patients in community clinics and the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau. Curriculum activities and content are supported by behavioral learning objectives and proficiency expectations are clearly defined.

Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Effective teachers are sought, particularly individuals who are interested in improving medical education and who work well on a team. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education. Faculty members need to remain current on developments and best practices in clinical medicine; also, need to research emerging industry trends, new technologies, concepts and techniques and work with the appropriate personnel to integrate these items into the department goals.

Responsibilities: 

Prepare course materials Deliver effective lectures across a broad range of medical topics Facilitate small group learning in labs and simulation Participate in ongoing departmental training for effective teaching and facilitation Participate in a robust peer review process Provide summative and formative assessment of student performance in various activities Prepare, administer, and grade clinical examinations Proctor written examinations as needed Supervise and teach students under actual or simulated clinical situations Participate in curriculum planning, development and delivery Advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel Develop new instructional materials and teaching techniques with participation in on-going reviews and revision of curriculum planning Actively participate in relevant professional activities in order to improve teaching and subject matter competence Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected, and confer with advisory groups in order to modify course content Prepare and review examination questions to assess students’ knowledge and proficiency Help cover the work of the department in a cooperative and collegial fashion Complete other projects and participate in other activities as assigned

Qualifications: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Below are the attributes of the education, experience, knowledge, and skills required to competently perform in this position:

• M.D., D.O. degree or equivalent medical qualification
• Current licensure and Board Certification
• Current active medical practice
• Current or past academic appointment at a medical university or college
• Experience teaching clinical skills courses in the medical school or residency training environment
• Knowledge of adult learning methodologies
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
