Opportunity at a Glance:
Reporting to the Department of Clinical Medicine Chair the Associate/Full Professor is a member of the larger RUSM Dominica faculty. The Department of Clinical Medicine teaches clinical skills to pre-clerkship students and helps to integrate clinical medicine with the basic science content of the Foundations of Medicine Curriculum. The Department goals focus on creating clinical context for the basic science lecture material across all semesters and introducing students to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) competencies, adapted for pre-clinical medical students. Lecture and small group formats are used for curriculum delivery and faculty are expected to be proficient in teaching in both settings. Interviewing and physical examination skills labs, case-based small group learning, a robust Standardized Patient program, and high fidelity medical simulation using Laerdal SimMan3G technology, are all employed for the Clinical Skills curriculum delivery. In addition, RUSM pre-clinical students have a number of required activities with live patients in community clinics and the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau. Curriculum activities and content are supported by behavioral learning objectives and proficiency expectations are clearly defined. Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Effective teachers are sought, particularly individuals who are interested in improving medical education and who work well on a team. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education. Faculty members need to remain current on developments and best practices in clinical medicine; also, need to research emerging industry trends, new technologies, concepts and techniques and work with the appropriate personnel to integrate these items into the department goals. Founded in 1978, Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) has more than 11,000 alumni who are practicing in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and beyond. RUSM students begin their journey to become physicians on the school’s campus in Dominica, located in the West Indies. Students complete a rigorous basic science curriculum, supported by cutting-edge instructional technology, including an anatomy and medical imaging laboratory and a simulation center where students begin to develop clinical skills. Students then complete their medical education by taking core and elective clinical rotations in U.S., Canada, and UK. In 2013, RUSM achieved a first-time pass rate of 97 percent on USMLE, which is on par with the rate achieved by US and Canadian schools, and above the rate achieved by osteopathic schools (94 percent) and international schools (79 percent).In 2014, RUSM graduates earned more than 800 residency positions; the largest number for any medical school in the world.
