PhD Position in Medical Science Aalto University, School of Science

We are looking for a Ph.D. student to a 5-year project “Proprioception in sensorimotor integration in health and disease”, funded by Academy of Finland and Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation. The work will be done at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE) of Aalto UniversitySchool of Sciencein close collaboration with the Helsinki University Hospital. The work will be done under the guidance of Dr. Harri Piitulainen.

The aim in the project is to explore the roles of proprioception ("sense of movement") in cortical sensorimotor integration in healthy, diseased (cerebral palsy), and recovering (stroke) brain. We will study the brain responses for proprioceptive stimuli both using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques. In the later stage of the project, we will investigate the relationship between proprioception, embodiment, cognitive performance, verbal and non-verbal social interaction, and perception of emotions from movements.

The task of the Ph.D. student is to participate the research and guide other students allocated to the project. The Ph.D. student is also expected to write high-quality scientific publications on the research results together with other members of our "Human sensorimotor system neuroscience" team.

An ideal candidate has a good knowledge in some or all of the following areas: methodology and analysis for fMRI and MEG (or EEG), and biomedical signal processing. Experience in Matlab, Python, etc. is a preference.

The position is located at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus, Espoo, Finland. The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University (from 2423,79 € upwards for M.Sc.). The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.

Full time doctoral candidates are expected to complete their PhD in four years, during which they should complete their PhD thesis and doctoral studies.
