Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow (Genomic Data Analyst) Monash UNiversity, School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine

The Opportunity

We are seeking highly motivated researchers in Human Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, Statistical Genetics, Population Genetics and/or Bioinformatics to perform large-scale genomic data analyses at the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine (SPHPM).

Monash plays a prominent role in public health in Australia and has recently established a program to integrate genomics into two of Australia's largest clinical trials and biobank cohorts (ASPREE and STAREE). These are primary prevention trials of healthy ageing in >19,000 and >10,000 participants respectively, involving longitudinal medical data collection and deep phenotyping of lifestyle, mood, cognition, neuroimaging and physical function data.

The studies involve biobanking at scale with ~15,000 consented samples currently stored in the ASPREE Healthy Ageing Biobank undergoing genomic analyses (combination of WGS and targeted sequencing). This is resulting in massive genomic data sets requiring linkage to medical and clinical outcome data.

Key aspects of the role:

  • Integrate genomic data into some of Australia's largest cohort studies, including rich phenotype data
  • Work in a diverse team of national and international collaborators, biostatisticians and clinicians
  • Turn large genomic datasets into meaningful epidemiological and clinical research outcomes
  • Conduct unique research into the genetics of healthy ageing, disease resilience, genetic predictors of disease (dementia, cancer, cardiovascular disease etc) and pharmacogenomics.

The following skills will be valued:

  • Solid grounding in human genetics, ability to think big
  • Experience in the analyses of large genomic data sets (genotyping microarray, DNA sequence) with integration of phenotypic and medical outcome data
  • Proficiency in genomic data analysis, bioinformatics, statistics, data analysis (R, SAS, STATA etc).

Successful candidates will spend time embedded within the Public Health Genomics Program, SPHPM, while connecting with other members of the Monash Bioinformatics Platform and Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences on a regular basis.  The Public Health Genomics Program is based at The Alfred Hospital, while the Monash Bioinformatics Platform's core is located at Monash's Clayton campus.

Please indicate in your cover letter which Level you are applying for - Level B or Level C.

Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to "How to apply for Monash Jobs"
