Postdoctor in lung and airway research Karolinska Institutet, Institute of Environmental Medicine
Postdoctor in lung and airway research Login and apply
The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.
Division
The Unit of Lung and Airway Research constitutes one of three research units within the Physiology area at IMM. This unit is headed by Professor Anders Linden and its scientific focus is to elucidate the environmental impact on pulmonary host defence with special focus on chronic inflammatory airway disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, asthma, and common bacterial infections. The unit has a strong track-record in the areas of innate immunity, Th17 biology and Toll-Like Receptors in human airways. Currently, the research unit includes one Senior researcher, a Senior lab manager, Post docs and PhD students as well as visiting scientists. The unit has an extensive collaborative network at the local, national and international level. Duties
The person we are looking for is expected to mainly focus on research involving state-of-the-art techniques in molecular and cellular biology of the airways and lungs. The successful candidate will mainly work to characterize the physiological and pathogenic role of Th17-associated cytokines in human airway tissue and cells, and the immunological mechanisms behind the increased susceptibility to infections in chronic inflammatory airway disorders. Functional studies on innate immune cells from human donors are of particular interest.
Qualifications
We stress scientific expertise and excellence when assessing applicants. Thus applications will be evaluated based on the scientific qualifications of the applicant but also in terms of appropriate methodological experience and technical skills as described above. Scientific quality, independence and competence in a wide range of laboratory techniques (methods) are of particular relevance for this position. Experience in handling clinical data from humans is an advantage. Documented knowledge and interest in mechanistic research on the respiratory system is qualifying as experience from working with human samples. The successful applicant should have good experience in analyses and interpretation of research data. The successful applicant should also be skilled in writing and speaking in English. Important personal characteristics include curiosity and engagement and social competence, in particular a documented ability to work in a team. Excellent skills in English, both oral and in writing are required (English is the official language at the unit).
We are looking for a skilled and senior post-doc researcher with documented experience in qualified research, already having a post-doc experience of a minimum of 2 years. This research should be in the field of biomedical science, preferably immunology or cell biology. Ideally, the candidate should have good knowledge in human Th17 biology and mechanistic research on the respiratory system. Qualifying factors include documented excellence in immunology, molecular and cell biology, good laboratory skills in molecular biology and cell biology, cell culture, ELISA, flow cytometry, microscopy and related techniques.
