Research Associate (Fixed Term)
Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the group of Professor Patrick Maxwell based at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR Medicine) part of the University of Cambridge Clinical School http://www.cimr.cam.ac.uk/research/principal-investigators/principal-investigators-i-p/maxwell . The Institute provides modern laboratory accommodation and excellent core facilities.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Research Associate to join a Wellcome Trust funded research project to investigate two ongoing projects. The first will use a multidisciplinary approach combining next generation sequencing, metabolomics and molecular biology to understand mitochondrially inherited kidney disease. The second project will investigate small molecule stabilisers of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF), used to increase erythropoiesis in patients with renal anaemia. These molecules have a range of on target and off target effects which need to be understood in order to exploit their therapeutic potential accurately.

Kiriakidis S et al. Complement C1q is hydroxylated by collagen prolyl 4 hydroxylase, and is sensitive to off target inhibition by prolyl hydroxylase domain inhibitors that stabilise Hypoxia Inducible Factor. Kidney Int. 2017.
Candidates must have a PhD in biomedical, biological or biochemical sciences and a strong publication record for their career stage. Relevant post-doctoral experience in molecular and cell biology is desirable and knowledge of the hypoxia pathway, ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal destruction or other experience directly relevant to the programme would be advantageous.
Candidates are expected to be self-motivated and collaborative with effective communication skills, enjoy working in a team and have the drive to become independent investigators. Proven capacity to design, execute, and interpret experimental data is essential.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 13 January 2020 in the first instance.
