Research Associate (Fixed Term)
We have a postdoctoral position available in the laboratory of Professor Yorgo Modis in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge to study cell entry and innate immune recognition of enveloped RNA viruses. This post is funded by the Wellcome Trust.
We seek a highly motivated individual to study the mechanisms of cell entry of enveloped RNA viruses and innate immune responses against these viruses using electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) image reconstruction and a combination of other biophysical and biochemical approaches.
Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent) in the biological, biochemical or biomedical sciences, and relevant research experience in cryoEM (single-particle or helical image reconstruction or image reconstruction from electron cryotomography). Candidates must have at least one first-author research article accepted for publication in a major peer-reviewed journal. Experience in large-scale protein expression and purification with eukaryotic expression systems is desirable.
The overarching goal of the Modis lab's research program is to gain a mechanistic understanding at the molecular level of how important pathogens interact with their host cells during infection. We seek to understand: how enveloped RNA viruses deliver their genome into the cytosol; how innate immune responses to viral RNA are generated, amplified and regulated; and how the cell controls transcription of integrated viral sequences. We employ a complementary set of approaches including X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, solution biophysics, fluorescence microscopy and cell biological approaches to understand the molecular mechanisms of these processes. Our projects have important potential applications in global health.
The Modis Laboratory is part of the new Molecular Immunity Unit within the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB). It benefits from the unique scientific environment and infrastructure of the MRC-LMB, and from direct links to the Infectious Disease and Immunology community within the Department of Medicine.
