We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant in Medical Entomology to support scientific management of a team involved in the development and evaluation of a novel tool for malaria vector control. The project is based at the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in Muheza, Tanga Region, Tanzania, in collaboration with the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College KCMUCo and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Working closely with the Principle Investigator (Dr. Matt Kirby), the Project Manager (Janneke Snetselaar), the LSHTM co-Investigator (Prof Mark Rowland) and KCMUCo co-Investigator (Prof Frank Mosha) the post-holder will be responsible for the local management of a Phase III vector control trial evaluating a novel indoor residual spray (IRS) product. Activities will include day to day supervision of the entomology team, evaluation of various trapping methods to access the impact of the IRS intervention on vector density, malaria transmission (EIR) and malaria parasite prevalence, monitoring the residual efficacy of the vector control intervention and to follow impact of the intervention on resistance in the main vectors. The project will be supported by grants from the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC) and Bayer Crop Science.
The successful candidate will be responsible for liaising with project partners including LSHTM and IVCC (UK), KCMUCo (Tanzania), NIMR Muheza (Tanzania), and prepare technical reports and publications.
This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career researcher to gain experience in a management position in a community-based trial with both an entomological and an epidemiological component. The project will entail the evaluation of a mixture of two active ingredients in an indoor residual spray which is designed to target both susceptible and pyrethroid resistant vectors of malaria.
The successful candidate must hold a MSc in Medical Entomology, Medical Parasitology or Control of Infectious Disease or similar MSc, and have experience of working in developing countries on vector research and control. The post will be based in Muheza and will include travel to Moshi, Tanzania when required and international travel for project meetings. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.
