Job Purpose

 

At Sharjah Institute for Medical Research, basic, translational clinical research and educational activities related to cancer, diabetes and Asthma are carried out. Approximately 50 faculty members from over 40 nations are currently working at the institute. 14 research groups with various research profiles are involved and we have around 15 PhD, 20 MSc students and more than 20 research assistants, technicians and postdocs. The institute combines state-of-the-art equipment with a broad knowledge in translational medicine, pharmaceutical and molecular biosciences.

 

To complement and strengthen our research, we are looking for a faculty member at the Assistant, associate or Professor level within the broad field of infection & immunity. Candidates using molecular, cellular and/or genetic approaches to investigate microbial pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions, or immune responses to pathogens and vaccination are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and maintain an energetic, well-funded research program; engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative research; and teach 50% of his/her time at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 

Main accountabilities & expectations

 

  • The candidate will spend 50% of his/her time conducting research in Sharjah Institute for Medical Research and 50% of his/her will be teaching courses in the college of Medicine.
  • Manage projects and serve as an expert in Immunology, genetics and pathogenesis of infection-related diseases
  • Maintain an independent and internationally competitive research program
  • Supervise postdocs, graduate students and technical personnel in research projects on Immunology, genetics and pathogenesis of infection-related diseases Apply for external funding - both national and international
  • Actively participate in academic, industry and health care collaborations
  • Teach courses in his/her field of expertise to both undergraduate and graduate students

Preferred Qualification & Experience


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in immunology, microbiology, parasitology, virology or other related field. The candidate should have a successful postdoctoral training experience with a superb record of research excellence and strong potential for obtaining competitive external grants to support their research. A strong track record of peer- reviewed publications and evidence of potential for teaching is required. The successful applicant must possess excellent interpersonal and communications skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

Competencies

 

  • Extensive and outstanding experience in experimental and/or clinical immunology-Infectious diseases, handling of animal models, immune functional assays, molecular and cellular techniques commonly used in immunological research.
  • Extensive experience in Immunology, genetics and pathogenesis of infection-related diseases.
  • Human immunology, especially innate immune mechanisms, vaccines, and mucosal immunology/human microbiome. 
  • The incumbent is expected to complement and collaborate with research groups with broad expertise in basic and translational immunology, microbial pathogenesis,. Priority will be given to candidates with a strong publication record, interests in immunotherapies for infectious diseases, Asthma and cancer. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, basic aspects of the immune response, systems biology, and/or the development of novel immunotherapies. Integration into interdisciplinary and translational research programs will be required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that enable him/her to smoothly interact with staff and faculty at the institute and effectively liaise on behalf of the institute among scientists, research centers, and funding agencies.
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to work with teams
